Multiple classic winner Machiavellianism bounced back to winning form by easily accounting for the opposition in the Gr 3 Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Cup, a terms race for four year olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s races. The big made son of Jazil showed his patented speed while coming from the deep and sailing past the front runners and was not unduly extended by jockey Srinath.
There was no doubting the class of Machiavellianism who was the universal choice to win this terms event. If at all there was any fear about his prospects, it concerned the fact that he had bled when finishing fourth in the Indian Derby and whether that trait had become chronic. That he bled in the Indian Derby due to over exhaustion over a trip he was not comfortable with was proved as he showed his immense class when winning from Sovetskaya and Southern Bay. The well performed Immense could have run the winner close but the horse took a fly jump and jockey Imran Chisty was unequal to the task as he was caught in a state of confusion as to which path to take. After initially thinking of improving on the outside, he dropped back to the last position from where the progeny of Gaswar made a spirited rally to be a close fourth. Sovetskaya made a mild rally from behind and succeeded in getting the runner up berth from Southern Bay. The winner clocked a time of one minute 27.7 seconds which was understandable as there was cut in the ground following good rains overnight.
Generally when the run of a horse results in controversy leading to suspension of a jockey, it is difficult to expect that horse to win next time out within a short span. Irfan Ghatala trained Icelander had got Suraj Narredu suspension for being over confident on the horse and in the process failed to overhaul the front runner who made good the lead. Now running in the lower division of the M N Prakash Memorial Trophy (Div II), a race for horses rated 40 to 65 after a break of the season, Icelander smashed the field with a strong start to finish mission, treating the opposition with disdain. Salsa Touch ran on from behind to take the second spot ahead of Next Move. Icelander was the shortest priced horse of the day highlighting the confidence of the connections that Icelander was unbeatable. The upper division of the race saw a big upset with Catamaran refusing to budge and staving off the late charge of Magnomical and favourite Samara Sun. Wind of Soul was a suggestive fourth.

The well backed Cirque Du Soleil gathered momentum from a handy third position with a furlong left in the race and won the 1400 metres Usha Stud Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 85, from Raphire who made a strong rally along the rails but found the eventual winner unrelenting. Ratham finished third from behind. Arabian Gold lost considerable ground at the start and this has become a regular trait with him.
Mumbai challenger Arch Duchess was the firm favourite to win the 1100 metres Mount Everest Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds. Arch Duchess was a runaway winner of a race which was declared null and void due to starting gate malfunction. As such, her experience was considered good enough to win the race where the local challengers were run of the mill. However, Hyderabad`s Shamrock Lady came in for sustained betting which indicated that this Vittal Deshmukh trainee was ready for the task. In the event, the issue was confined to these two horses, with Arch Duchess who led all the way, weakening inside the final 100 metres as Shamrock Lady got stronger and justified the money that was riding on her.
Neil Darashah trained Nabisco who was strongly backed to win the 1400 metres Allaire Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45, duly obliged with a flourishing run in the final furlong and managed to surge past Strengthandwonder and Scarlet O Hara who was disputing the issue. The latter managed to finish second. Suleiman Attaollahi trained Arziki went on a start to finish mission in the lower division of the race and successfully held off the bid of favourite Royal Salute who, despite the hard-driving by Srinath, could not cover up the leeway.
Trainer Neil Darashah had a rewarding day saddling a treble as apart from Nabisco; he had winners through The Guardian and Velvetine who were both runaway winners. Velvetine came through the shortest way home and left the field standing in the 1400 metres Malenahalli Plate, a race for lowest rated horses with Thunder finishing from behind to finish long way back second. The Guardian, who was nursed back to fitness, won the race over six furlongs in the 20 to 45 category in equally emphatic fashion with Alpine Show unable to even chase the shadow of the winner.
