Acclaimed makes a winning return in BTC Trophy

By: Frankel   April 6 , 2014

Pesi Shroff trained Acclaimed overcame ring rustiness and managed to get the better of Myla Rose in the 1600 metres Bangalore Turf Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Sunday`s races. Acclaimed had suffered a setback when he was brought to Bangalore for the 2000 Guineas in December and had since then been rested. Though he looked on the heavier side and was 20 kgs heavier than when he raced last about 217 days ago, his class carried him home.

Acclaimed was backed to the exclusion of the rest as the others in the fray had moved up to this category through handicap route and lacked class. The belief of race goers that class will carry paid off though Acclaimed had to be stretched to win from Myla Rose. Last outing winner Myla Rose went on a start to finish mission and was not inclined to give up easily. Trevor had to drive out Acclaimed to measure the front runner in the shadow of the post. Mountbatten came from a long way back to be a close third. Now that Acclaimed has made a winning return, he should repeat if he runs again during the season which is in its concluding leg.

Pesi Shroff had a quick double for the day as the well bred Belvedere who is the daughter of Epsom Derby winning Authorized enjoyed every inch of the 2000 metres trip to win the Sion F Nessim Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, with a start to finish mission. The favourite had a healthy lead right from the start and looked in no danger of being overhauled by her rivals. Fleetwood Mac bridged the gap in the end to finish second ahead of Dixie Delight. Belvedere who has started blossoming late in her career, should move up swiftly in the handicap scale.

One is not sure if champion jockey Sandesh has ridden any winner for champion trainer Pesi Shroff during the season. When Sandesh was declared to ride the got abroad filly Revlon in the 1400 metres Karl Umrigar Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds, race goers widely expected the duo to click. However, it was not to be as Revlon struggled to keep pace and stayed put in about the fourth position, unable to make any impression Malesh Narredu trained Godspeed led all the way and skipped away from Pepito in the end to record an impressive win. The daughter of Multidimensional appears a good type of youngster. Zazou finished third ahead of the faovurite.
Dallas Todywalla trained Greek God recorded his third straight win when the three year old raced aggressively in front and easily held off the challenge of Koalaa to win the 1000 metres Bahrain Trophy, a race for three year olds. Hudson Hawk was third while Heart of the City did not show any improvement over his previous effort and finished a tame fourth.

The last four runs of Ultrasonic had proved unproductive and hence the Imtiaz Sait trainee was ignored in the betting ring with Wild Waves expected to complete a hat-trick in the 1200 metres V P Koregaonkar Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Ultrasonic went sailing clear in the final furlong to win with ease from Wild Waves who found the eventual winner too speedy for comfort. Sheer Romance nosed out Ice Affair for the third slot; the last named being hampered by the outside draw and forced to travel wide all the way.

Trainer Bezan Chenoy had the mortification of seeing two of his wards losing out in tight finishes in the last two races of the day. Neptune`s Ocean was the strong favourite to win the 1200 metres M D Petit Plate (Div I) but faltered. Mountain Prince who had lost close home in his previous essay was taken on a start to finish mission by apprentice jockey Mosin and the well backed second favourite just about lasted out to win from fast finishing Tempest who covered acres of ground in the final furlong only to miss the berth by a whisker. Neptune`s Ocean was a well beaten third. Nature Boy who was the betting rage in the lower division of the race produced a strong run inside the final 200 metres to land the spoils. The supporters of the faovurite had a scare when long shot Victorian very nearly made his debut run a winning one but fell short in the end. Both Tempest and Victorian will be too good to miss next time out.

D J Surti trained Quando Quando produced a late rally to land the spoils in the 1400 metres Samuel Nathan Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Shockalot appeared to have a stolen march in the final furlong when he broke into a good lead but failed to sustain when Quando Quando came up with a strong challenge. Shockalot however held off Mt Tianmen for the runner up berth.
