Dr Poonawalla, Business Leader of the Year

Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman of Poonawalla Group which includes Serum Institute of India won the Asian Business Leader of the Year award for his outstanding contribution in the field of medicine. G P Hinduja, Co-Chairman of the Hinduja Group presented the award to Poonawalla and hailed his achievements at a glittering function at Grosvenor House Hotel, London Friday night. The other people who have been honored in the past include such eminent business people such as Ratan Tata, Shiv Nadar, Adi Godrej and Jiang Jianqing, the chairman of the largest bank in the world, ICBC.

Cyrus Poonawalla is head of the Serum Institute of India, one of the largest producers of pediatric vaccines in the world. According to Forbes, Mr Poonawalla has recently seen his personal wealth increase by $1bn to just over $4bn. His work with vaccines has won personal accolades from the likes of Bill Gates and Prince Charles. His group company also has interests in horse racing in which his family have a deep historical association with. Dr Poonawalla was the past Chairman of Royal Western India Turf Club for several years and also represented India in several international racing forums.

Receiving the award, Dr Poonawalla said :``While we recognize our moral responsibility to make vaccines affordable, I strongly believe that it is appropriate for other manufacturers, to also follow our lead and make vaccines available at more affordable prices; otherwise our offer of giving vaccines at lower prices will be defeated.``

Asia`s richest man Li Ka-Shing is Lui Che Woo, the entrepreneur who has seen his wealth almost double recently to an astonishing $23bn. Dr Lui, 84, is chairman of K Wah group which has interests in property, hotels and Casinos through Macau-based Galaxy Entertainment group was also honoured. A citizen of Hong Kong, he was honoured with the MBE in 1982 by Her Majesty The Queen and appointed Justice of the Peace (JP) in 1986 for his exemplary contributions to the community.

On confirming the honors, Founder of The Asian Awards Paul Sagoo said, “We all hear of the amazing stories of wealth creation in India and China but seldom get to understand the stories behind the people who create them. It`s great to see The Asian Awards honoring such amazing people, not only have they created wealth for their communities they are also focused on philanthropy and giving back. As we know philanthropy in Asia lags far behind that of the west, which makes honoring such individuals even more important.” Paul continued, “The Asian Awards has always honored the very wealthiest of Asians not by design but because these people have stood out for reasons other than just being wealthy.”

A host of stars, business leaders and politicians attended the Asian Awards, hosted by Lord Sebastian Coe, which celebrated the outstanding achievements of individuals born in or with direct family origin from all of Asia across all disciplines of life. The annual event has become one of the largest gatherings of ultra high net-worth people to be staged in the UK.
M S Dhoni, India`s cricket cap6tain was also honored. Former England cricketer Ramprakash, who was to present the award at the glittering ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel, read out a message from Dhoni "dedicating the award" to his fans in Asia and all over the world.

The citation said, "Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the greatest finishers in limited over cricket. Under his captaincy, India has won numerous awards including the 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the CB Series of 2007-08, the 2010 Asia Cup, the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

"In 2013, Dhoni became the first captain to win all the three ICC trophies. Dhoni was ranked 16th on the Forbes list of highest paid athletes."
