Sandesh drives out Heatwave to victory

By: Frankel   April 20 , 2014

Once again Sandesh`s effort on Heatwave highlighted the fact that choice of jockeys often has a bearing on the result. After two runner up efforts thanks to lack of strong support in the saddle, Heatwave obliged as a well backed favourite in the 1400 metres Cursetjee Dhunjishaw Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Sunday`s races. Last start winner Victoria Falls faltered in the final stages of the race to end up as second best. Jockey Sandesh had another fruitful day booting home a treble.

Trainer Antia has had a great season having moved to the second position in the trainers` tally. He has been the despair of punters often as many of his horses won as long shots during the season. Only in the last couple of weeks he mended his ways and sought the services of good jockeys and with profitable result. He had saddled a brace of winners on Saturday and repeated the feat on Sunday, with jockey Sandesh being associated with both the wins. Sandesh`s strong driving finish surely helped the cause of Heatwave.

Though Victoria Falls began as the prime fancy, the flood of money on Heatwave reflected the confidence of the connections with the latter going to the post as the first favourite. Running Sun did the pace setting followed by Knight of Ke with Victoria Falls in about the third position followed by Barringo, Trance and Heatwave. Sandesh had to work on Heatwave in order to stay in touch with the front runners. Inside the final 300 metres, Victoria Falls smoothly surged ahead with Heatwave going in chase with a late rally as is his wont. Sandesh`s persevering effort saw Heatwave gain ascendancy in the final moments of the race over Victoria Falls. Trance ran on to finish third ahead of Barringo while Knight of Ke came back in distress, having burst his blood vessels.

The 1800 metres Racing Journalists Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, saw the well backed Samba Warrior record an emphatic win over favourite Fleetwood Mac who flattered to deceive. Fleetwood Mac moved up wide at the final bend but smoothly took charge of the proceedings and had a useful lead going to the final furlong even as Samba Warrior was held up briefly along the rails. However, the latter produced a big burst of speed when pulled out and given a free run on the wide outside. Samba Warrior devoured ground and had the favourite beaten well before the winning post was sighted. Feast of Love was a faraway third.

Zadmal Singh trained Moussaeif made a winning debut in the 1000 metres Dady Adenwalla Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. The well backed Act of Valour showed plenty of speed to go darting clear from the start but ran out of steam in the final furlong. Moussaeif weaved her from behind, got strong in the final moments of the race and won with a measure of comfort from the favourite who held off Something Special to retain the runner up berth. Favourite Spades was never in the hunt, finishing a tame fourth. The three year old son of dual Guineas winner Cockney Rebel, Cezanne showed quantum improvement with the benefit of a race run and simply swept the others off their feet from the start to win the lower division of the race with ease. Favourite Sweet As Honey failed to pick up speed in the straight and plodded home in second position.

Janardhan trained Ladybird just about got the better of Zeda to claim the 1200 metres Jimmy Bharucha Trophy, a race for three year olds. Zeda went on a start to finish mission and looked capable of pulling it off as the jockey of Ladybird, Akshay seemed to be inconvenienced by the saddle having moved. However, the jockey kept his nerve and managed to guide the shortest priced horse of the day to victory.

Favourite Vasco Da Gama lost his way midway through the race and was not spotted in the 1600 metres Rajcoomar Gujadhur Memorial Trophy. It was left to Protector of Paris and Shining Path to dispute the issue. The duo fought all the way in the final furlong, with Trevor Patel managing to steer Protector of Paris to win by a whisker.

Sandesh drove out faovurite Essence of Love to victory in the 1200 metres K J K Irani Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Ancient World engaged the favourite in the battle for supremacy before fading out in the final furlong. Ceasarina threatened for a while but cut an erratic course and lost all her chances. Thunder Star made a late rally but it was not good enough to threaten the supremacy of favourite who had seized the initiative in the final furlong.

Mansoor Shah`s Small Treasure recorded an encore with a powerful surge in the final furlong to win the 1000 metres Atmosphere Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, with great deal of ease. The horse which could have troubled Small Treasure was drawn the widest of all and had raw apprentice Yash Narredu to guide him. Yash was riding his second race of his career which he started earlier in the day with a ride on Barringo. Yardstick and Polar Zone occupied the next two slots.

In the Gymkhana race held after the last race, Anya Shroff ridden Hope nosed out Atul in a tight finish. The victory of champion trainer Pesi Shroff`s daughter, in her first gymkhana race, sparked off big celebrations from the connections.
