Godspeed redeems her reputation

  July 27 , 2014

Malesh Narredu trained Godspeed redeemed her reputation with an easy start to finish win in the Gr 3 Bangalore Summer Million, the feature event of Sunday`s races. Godspeed had come to Bangalore with the reputation of being a classic prospect but her below par run in the Fillies Championship due to combination of circumstances had somewhat diminished her aura. However, her victory over the mile long trip with an aggressive run in front was an encouraging sign that she could turn out to be a Guineas winner.

Godspeed had been done in by the wide draw in the Fillies Championship where she could not get a clear run and finished a disappointing third to Maisha. Now taking on horses which had no experience of performing in Graded races barring top weighted Bold Majesty who had finished fourth in the Derby, Godspeed went to the post as a favourite. Jockey Suraj Narredu had the daughter of Multidimensional take charge from the start and though she came away from the rails in search of good ground, she packed too many punches for the opposition as she finished comfortably ahead of Bold Majesty. The rest of the runners were under pressure to catch up with The General rallying to edge past Lucia to get the third spot. Torch Bearer who had impressed by his runaway win earlier during the season ran a very disappointing race, finishing a dismal fifth.

The 1400 metres Stewards Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, had three individual Derby winners in the race. Four year old Southern Emperor who had won last year`s Mysore Derby and then finished second in the Golconda Derby at Hyderabad had good credentials to win but the fact that he was running for the first time after 141 days and hadn`t won for 275 days was a dissuading factor because there was also questions about fitness. Strangely the champion horse of the monsoon season hadn`t won a single race on the Bangalore track as all his three wins had come at Mysore. As such, on current form, the best horse was Ridgeway who had run a fair race last time out and accordingly he was made the favourite. There was some support for Mumbai import Winston who was running in Bangalore for the first time. The speedy Field Marshal led the field from the start with Ridgeway who did not get a brisk start, moving up swiftly to be in touch with the front runner. Ridgeway overhauled the front runner inside the final two furlongs and bounced clear. Southern Emperor came up with a spirited run and looked like he was going to collar the front runner but slackened possibly due to being ring rusty. Ridgeway held on to win. Inquisition came from behind to finish third ahead of Athletic Star.

Though Suleiman Attaollahi trained Passing Fulcrum had finished dismally in his last run, he had put in some noteworthy workouts during morning trials and as such, he was expected to put up a good show in the 1400 metres Brave Dancer Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The lack of support in the ring sent confusing signals. Ganapathy trained Republican Star was another three year old who hadn`t done anything of note thus far in his career but was backed with such enthusiasm that his victory was taken for granted. Vivid Impression was another who cornered lot of support. However, the three year old filly played up at the gates, did not come out of the gates for a long while and was out of the reckoning straightaway. Republican Star was sluggish at the start but jockey Christopher improved places quickly on the outside to take charge within the first two furlongs. The favourite however packed up without a fight when Passing Fulcrum ranged on the outside. Passing Fulcrum went sailing clear and had no problem in staving off the rally of Sakchi and Arziki.

The seasonal drop of six points worked to the advantage of Amit Cady trained Summer Gold who got a drop from 28 points 22 and thus became eligible to race in the lowest category. Backed to on money favouritism despite not a single forward effort in all his four runs in the earlier season, the progeny of New Famous was a distance clear of the rest in the final furlong and won the 1400 metres Kranji Plate in the manner of a good quality horse. The fight was restricted for minor placings with Nation`s Glory and You`re A Star getting the next two slots on the frame with a neck separating these two runners.
The daughter of Danehill Dancer, Super Queen was making her debut in the 1100 metres Track Lightning Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds and was backed to the exclusion of the rest. Suraj had Super Queen racing behind Our Little Dragon till entering the straight and thereafter, the three year old filly smoothly cruised past the rest to win by a widening margin of six lengths in the manner of top class horse. Our Little Dragon just about survived to finish second ahead of Good Fruit.

Jaggy Dhariwal trained Samara Sun brought off a stunning upset in the 1200 metres Treasure Girl Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Samara Sun breezed past the opposition in the final furlong to record an impressive win over favourite Wind And Flight and Summer Sun whose fourth was suggestive of an imminent success. Cool Hand recorded an encore in the lower division of the race getting the better of favourite King Julien with a measure of comfort in the final furlong and expanded the margin swiftly to four lengths.
