Camborne does an encore in great style

By: Tippu Sultan   July 28 , 2014

Leo D`Silva trained Camborne recorded an encore in splendid fashion in the 1100 metres Dr Harish Chandra Memorial Trophy, a Category II race that highlighted a small card of six events that were gone through at Malakpet on Monday. The track received some welcome rains and racing was conducted without any hitch though heavy rains preceding the start of the programme had put some doubt about conditions being conducive for racing. Barring one upset, the day`s races went the way of fancied runners.

Camborne had won on Friday and the trainer was quick to take advantage of the race that was available in three days time against modest lot of horses. Though Camborne went as a short priced horse, it was only to be expected as he looked the best bet of the day. Camborne tracked the speedy Shatakshi well into the straight. A back hander from apprentice Akshay Kumar was enough to make the horse quicken. Camborne left the field stranded to win with ease from Secret Angel and Montauk who came from a long way back to finish a suggestive third.

The progeny of Yeats was yet another who proved too good for the field in the 1400 metres Flowers Of The Forest Cup, a Category III race. Three years old race in Category II when racing as maidens but in open class they have a chance to run in Category III. Valerian Steel who is bred to stay had summered at Bangalore without finding a suitable race to make his mark. Relaxed in about the fourth position by jockey Imran Khan, Valerian Steel picked up speed in the straight and had no resistance from any of the runners en route to a smashing win by a widening margin of seven lengths. Favourite Rani struggled despite jockey Suraj Narredu driving out the horse with vigor and finished a tame second ahead of Golden Essence. A saddle malfunction resulted in jockey M F Alikhan come a cropper on Baashagar inside the final 350 metres. The jockey escaped with only a scare. Incidentally, it has become a common sight in Hyderabad for jockeys to be unseated and this was the fourth incident in just three days of racing.

Golden Phantom broke a winless drought for 532 days by claiming the 1600 metres Nawab Mehdi Jung Bahadur Memorial Cup, a Category III race under jockey Imran Khan for trainer Shezad Abbas. The horse had also been raced sparingly and the last race of the four year old was about 210 days ago. That Golden Phantom had class was something everybody believed as they sent him to the post as a favourite despite the fact that he was ring rusty. After tracking Mount Titlis into the straight, Imran left Golden Phantom to have his say. The progeny of Steinbeck immediately bounced clear and was eased up well before the winning post to win by four lengths over Jerrell and Fairy Emperor.

Srinivas Reddy trained Altruist took charge of the proceedings within the first furlong and had no problem in keeping his rivals at bay in the 1200 metres Set Alight Plate, a Category II race for maiden three year olds. There was inspired for Pour Vous but the favourite struggled for speed and plodded home. Kohinoor Grace managed to take the second spot.

Satyanarayana trained Jaden Girl was the only upset of the day, winning the 1400 metres Tungabhadra Plate, a Category II race in the hands of fresh apprentice Sai Kiran. Jaden Gil moved with a flourish from about the position at the top of the straight to assume command with a furlong left in the race and comfortably held of Olive and late finishing Handsome Hunk.

The well backed Go For Gold who had been waited with for about 267 days, duly obliged in the 1100 metres Maltese Prince Plate, a Category III race. Go For Gold came into the straight with a rail skimming run but in the straight came off the rails but nevertheless was too good for the field and won easily in the hands of five kg claimer Sameeruddin. Lips Locking rallied well to neck out Sonic for the second spot.
