War Games scores on Shailesh`s day

By: Goldie Boy   July 28 , 2014

Apprentice jockey Mohammed Azharuddin guided the 13-10 favourite, War Games, to a narrow victory, over Alcander, in the 1,200m Moon Mission Handicap, Monday`s feature event. Alcander`s may have robbed trainer Vijay Singh of a possible treble, in the day`s seven-event card, the champion trainer had his day well planned. He went on to saddle two public choices to victory on an afternoon which was otherwise ruled by the long-priced winners. Jockey Shailesh Shinde, who helped Vijay`s cause, ended the afternoon with a fine treble.

War Games chased Alcander, the long time leader, till a furlong from home and the Javed-Khan-trained horse just about managed to catch-up the frontrunner virtually at the winning-post. In fact, Alcander was going great guns, inside the last furlong of the race as Azharuddin failed to stop the favourite, from shifting out in the home stretch. However, the apprentice was quick to take the remedial measure and rode the favourite with hands and heels, on the far side track.

Vijay started his day with the victory of the 6-10 favourite, Evesham, in the 1,100m Golden Praise Handicap. The favourite, though short in experience, having proved a big letdown in his maiden outing, last winter, returned as an easy winner. The Tariq colt, however, was another one who shifted out badly at the top of the home stretch but displayed plenty of acceleration on the far-side track to score by five long lengths over the hapless chaser Beyond Expectation, a Javed-trained charge.

Vijay`s Deserving Visit, another hot favourite, in the 10-horse field lined up for the 1,200m Pentagon Handicap, was however, an impressive winner. The 15-20 favourite, won almost from the start. In the same race, trainer Bharath Singh`s Santos, an 11-4 second in the betting, was right in contention till the top of the home turn but found the winner too good and thus went backwards. It was, therefore, left to the likes of Christopher Gleich`s long shot, Jassi`s Star, and Goliath in lurch of the minor gains.

Shailesh had started his day with the start-to-finish victory on Astatki in the upper division of the Brush Aside Handicap. The failed favourite, in the lower Class on the opening day of the season, had found the topweight to his disadvantage. With lighter impost, in the mixed set, the 4-1 chance galloped freely upfront to last out to score over Bharath`s 11-10 favourite, Torero, who, perhaps, needed the run.

The lower division of the race witnessed trainer Shafiq Khan`s rank-outsider, Significant, humbling Vijay`s 16-10 favourite, Elusive Legend. Apprentice Mohammed Javed, atop the favourite, tried to win from the start but inside the last furlong it was the Significant who proved much stronger to easily go pass the leader.

Trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s Stiling Veil dealt the biggest jolt to the pool hunters when the six-year-old galloper covered plenty of ground in the stretch run to overhaul the field, the 1,400m Hokaido Cup, the only trophy on offer, in the card. His victims included Shivalik Shakti, who was a good second in his last outing, and the two frontrunners, Style Dan, the 15-20 hot property, and Skyway.

Trainer Jasveer Singh`s Vaani, a 5-1 chance in the betting, won the day`s opener, the 1,200m Richie Rich Handicap. The was impressive in his recent mock race and cashed in on the advantage as each of Le Chocolat, Sreeyantra and Dance In China attracted an good support in the betting at 3-1 odds.
