Secret Angel leads the Grand Parade of upsets

By: Tippu Sultan   August 12 , 2014

Laxman Singh trained Secret Angel did one better in the 1200 metres Grand Parade Cup (Div I), a Category II race, the feature event of races held at Malakpet on Tuesday. After short priced money favourites dominated racing all these weeks, racing was back to old times with winner picking in each of the races proving a risky proposition as the parade of outsiders making punters crib about the way things change overnight at Malakpet. Either you have flurry of favourites winning or when they take a holiday, you will be left in the lurch.

Mukhtar went on a start to finish mission with Secret Angel within striking distance. With apprentice jockey Tanwar unable to ride out vigorously, it looked as though the front runner would escape to victory. However, Secret Angel responded well in the dying moments of the race and managed to surge past the long time leader in the shadow of the post. Robust finished on strongly taking the third spot. Favourite Pacific Star was not on the radar. The lower division of the race saw rank outsider Yours Truly seize control of the race inside the final furlong from front running Price Warrior and speed away to victory. Gaarswood came up with late rally to finish second ahead of favourite Overshadow who came from the back of the field to finish third.

Green Jewel fought a stiff battle with Amazing Approach to get the nod in the dying moments of the race in the 1000 metres Deccan Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Amazing Approach darted to the lead from the outside draw and had to encounter a strong challenge from Green Jewel closer home. These two horses were little wide apart which could have been the reason for jockey Pawar to relax in the end as he possibly thought he had clinched the issue. However, he had been necked out by Green Jewel. The Stewards suspended Pawar for his action of relaxing when he need to be very vigilant. Rubyonrails was faraway third. Faisal Hassan`s Khoshgel had summered at Bangalore, was even fancied to win there and as such, after the forward effort on the local track, the daughter of Gaswar was expected to come out of the maidens` rank in the lower division of the race. The race held in pouring rain saw Romantic Fire and Fruit Roll Up pull away from the rest and fight out the final furlong. The latter drifted out of a straight course at a crucial time which ultimately swung the race in favour of the former.

Anant Vatsalya trained Golden Dash recoded an encore in the 1400 metres Blue Wave Plate, a Category III race, and helped those who put their trust only on favourites. Golden Dash warmed up to the task on the wide outside and managed to overhaul the front running The Challenge easily and won with a measure of comfort. Khalis Gold nosed out Jaz Elle for the third slot.

Srinivas Reddy`s Field Smasher showed good improvement over his previous effort by claiming the 1200 metres Tenacity Cup, a Category III race. Goldie and favourite Lips Locking were battling it out in the final furlong but before the latter could gain ascendancy, Field Smasher pounced on these two on the wide outside and won with a measure of comfort at nourishing odds.

Dear Friend chased favourite Roma Royal into the straight before getting stronger in the final 100 metres to win the 1100 metres Treasure Wind Plate, a Category III race. True Haven made a late dash to edge past the long time leader to take the runner up berth.
