Frenemee upsets in Star of Mysore Trophy

By: Stay Thirsty   August 22 , 2014

Babu Rao trained Frenemee who had been consistently hitting the board in the recently concluded Bangalore Summer Season, assumed charge in the final furlong and then held off a strong challenge from Sofast to win the 1400 metres Star of Mysore Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Friday`s races. Royal Salute who was widely expected to win despite running after a longish absence from the track ruled himself out of contention by racing at the wrong end of the field for most of the trip and did not show the spark that was associated with him.

Royal Salute`s formidable reputation ensured that he went to the post as a strong favourite. Frenemee took a smart jump from the gates to lead the way along with Color Me with Sofast in about the fourth position while Royal Salute was eased in the penultimate position. Frenemee took a while to gain ascendancy over Color Me and he did no inside the final furlong. But he could not breathe easy as Sofast essayed a strong challenge. Frenemee barely lasted out to win by a head. Artic Rose was faraway third ahead of favourite Royal Salute whose run has to be taken with a pinch of salt. Scholar and Demanding Format were withdrawn from the fray.

Neil Darashah trained Jolie easily accomplished a start to finish mission, winning the 1100 metres Cauvery Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Favourite Cattleya showed up with an impressive burst on the wide outside with a furlong left in the race but the front runner produced that bit extra to skip away and record an easy win. Society Music was third ahead of Game Dancer. Mystic Shadow who came in for inspired betting easily accounted for Anmol Hira to claim the lower division of the race. Kentucky Rose rallied along the rails to get the third slot.
Bipin Salvi trained Grand Success won the 1200 metres Varada Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, confined to local horses. The six year old gelding had last won 931 days ago and had come down significantly in scales as his previous win had come in the 40 to 65 category at Bangalore. Jockey Gnaneshwar had favourite Grand Success in a striking position before turning for home and the well backed runner stormed home having the race sewn up long way from home. Dominica showed some urgency when the race had been in the safe keeping of the favourite. Sivanta came from a long way back to finish third.

Anchal Beauty led every yard of the 1400 metres trip in the R R Komandur Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, except the final one and lost the race in a tight finish to Precious Replica. These two runners broke away from the pack at the top of the straight with Anchal Beauty looking like she may just about scrape through but surrendered by a whisker to Precious Replica in the closing stride of the race. Ultimate Princess was third while favourite Santa Maria was not spotted.

Monnappa trained Zamindar brought off a big upset in the 1400 metres Talakadu Plate (div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Oriental Belle who went on a start to finish mission encountered unexpected resistance from Zamindar who flew home to win with ease in the end. Favourite Thunder struggled without giving hope at any stage of the race. Five year old mare Nation`s Glory finally broke the maidens` ranks after 23 starts by winning the lower division of the race in a runaway fashion by a widening margin of eight lengths over Peppr and Glorious Moments who are involved in a tight finish for the second spot.

Veteran trainer Zareer Darashah trained Royal Regina appeared to have faltered going into the final furlong as she came away from the rails allowing a wide gap for Always United to sneak through in the 1100 metres Regency Gold Plate, a lowest category race confined to local horses. However, the power packed riding of jockey Y S Srinath ensured that Royal Regina justified the favouritism by a narrow margin. Glorious Light was third.
