Ace Bucephalus obliges after agonizingly long wait

By: Stay Thirsty   August 28 , 2014

Azhar Ali trained Ace Bucephalus who had been showing indifferent form on the race track despite blazing the track, finally bounced back to winning form after 548 days on the very same track as he claimed the 1800 metres Sanctity Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Thursday`s races. Ace Bucephalus had been campaigned ambitiously after the promise he showed as a juvenile and midway through his career he was shifted to trainer Irfan Ghatala. With the latter` long suspension, his assistant Azhar Ali who got a license to train during the summer season, had the privilege of winning on the progeny of Rebuttal.

Ace Bucephalus had certainly been somewhat of enigma. After a brilliant one length second behind Amazing Grace during the summer season, he was widely expected to win his next outing but under Pradeep Chouhan, he missed the kick and finished fifth to Scarlet O`Hara. The field he was taking this time was a modest one and since he was on better terms with Pursuit of Fame who had finished ahead of him last time out, he was hugely supported to win. Ace Bucephalus did not disappoint this time, winning with ease in the hands of veteran jockey Srinath who had a lucrative treble for the day.

Pursuit of Fame went on a start to finish mission, with Ace Bucephalus settled in a handy second position while the rest were spaced out behind these two runners. At the top of the straight, Ace Bucephalus steadily bridged the gap and collared the front runner and went away for an easy win. Jockey Srinath could look back to see where the opposition was before relaxing in the saddle. Pursuit of Fame was a tame second while Winged Foot was faraway third, just getting the better of Spinning Chakram in the closing strides of the race.
Following on the footsteps of Ace Bucephalus was Virat who was winless after being re-located to Bangalore and found his bearings at Mysore where he had reached the highest class. It was 456 days since Virat had won and now he was taking on a inferior lot of horses. He was backed down spiritedly in the betting ring from a higher quote and he did not disappoint. Virat produced a strong run in the final furlong to get past the battling duo of will Star and Amazing Redd to win the 1200 metres Safi Darashah Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 60 and above. Lesser fancied Talisker came through with a powerful run down the final furlong and measured Ice Cutter to win the lower division of the race Favourite Imperial Applause drifted out of a straight course and ran the final stages of the race on the outer sand track and caused a huge dent in the pockets of those who put faith on favourites.

Dinesh Pujar trained Lads Ability engaged the front running Ice Splendour in a battle for supremacy and got stronger close home to win the 1400 metres M K Srinivas Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Absolute Brave finished with a flourish to get the second spot ahead of Ice Splendour.

Satish Narredu trained Woodberg made amends for her last start failure when staving off the challenge of favourite Mandarin and Zagato to claim the 1200 metres Kasargod Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Srinath had to be aggressive on the second favourite to quicken decisively in the final furlong. Another Narredu ward Star Kingdom had no problem in winning the lower division of the race as the well backed horse kept Forest Tern at a safe distance.

Narayan Gowda`s Markus Sittikus displayed the kind of talent that was noticeably absent in his runs during the summer season as he trounced the opposition in the 1400 metres Lt Col D K Mistry Memorial Plate (Div I), a ace for horses rated in the lowest class. Emancipation was second ahead of Penalty Kick. Suleiman Attaollahi trained Aj One easily won the lower division of the race with a good burst of speed in the final furlong to measure the front running Mister Grey. Our Commander weakened after being prominent and lost the third slot to Kimora who finished on well.
