The Myth upsets in Mysore 1000 Guineas

By: Stay Thirsty   September 11 , 2014

Karthik Ganapathy trained The Myth won the Gr 3 Mysore 1000 Guineas, the first classic of the season, with surprising ease on Thursday. Contrary to market expectation of a stiff fight between Pure Allure, Super Queen and Fatal Attraction, it was Mumbai challenger The Myth who floored them all with a powerful run in the final furlong to win in a fast timing of one minute 35.58 seconds to provide first season sire Dancing Forever, his first classic success.

Pure Allure who had twice won over a sprint, the last one in heavy underfoot conditions at Bangalore, was backed to the exclusion of the rest as Super Queen didn`t impress in the paddock parade and the expected thrust on her in the betting ring did not come. The rest of the runners were all at nourishing odds.

Obelinna Princess set a solid clip followed by Precious Replica, Pure Allure, Fortaleza, Super Queen, The Myth, Smoking Bell and Fatal Attraction racing behind in that order. The race was run at a furious pace so much so that those who went with the pace all weakened with Obelinna Princess finishing last. The outcome of the race was confined to the three horses which brought up the rear end with only Pure Allure staying on to finish fourth.

Obelinna Princess weakened inside the final 300 metres but with all the runners bunched up, it took another 100 metres for the race to evolve. Pure Allure had all the chances but she did not quicken the way she had done in soft underfoot conditions and was unable to shake off her rivals. The Myth came through the middle while Smoking Bell shot through the rails. Srinath brought Fatal Attraction on the wide outside. The Myth made a decisive thrust with about 100 metres left in the race and had the race well sewn up. Fatal Attraction flattered to deceive as despite the best efforts of Srinath to bring her in and prevent her outward drift, the daughter of Authorized ran out and eventually ended on the sand track. The Myth won in the end with ease from Smoking Bell with Fatal Attraction and Pure Allure occupying the next three slots, with a neck separating each of these runners. Since these horses are improving types, their next runs should give a real clue as to the handicap mark that they may reach in their career.

The 1200 metres Civil Services Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, provided an absorbing finish with Sweet Secret and Wind Wonder going past the post locked together. Both the horses had cut identical timings including the fractions which resulted in the first dead heat of the season coming off. Sweet Secret shot ahead inside the final furlong and established a healthy lead. However, Suraj on Wind Wonder was not inclined to give up easily and his persevering efforts saw Wind Wonder cover up the leeway with both these finishers desperately close at the post. The winners clocked a time of one minute 10.92 seconds which incidentally was fractionally slower than the one clocked in the lower category by Conrod. Favourite Emperor Cruise reared up at the gates and was withdrawn on veterinary grounds.

Suraj Narredu`s power packed riding enabled Wind And Flight to land the spoils in the 1200 metres A C Somanna Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Wind And Flight was slightly inconvenienced by the outward drift of Ungoogleable but Suraj reacted to the emerging situation swiftly and drove out the favourite to get the better of Cool Baby. Champakali was third ahead of Ungoogleable with a neck each separating these runners. Azhar Ali trained Conrod won the lower division of the race in a common canter. Hitting the front within the first furlong, Conrod came alone in the straight and kept on expanding the lead to win an excellent time of one minute 10.18 seconds which was the fastest timing clocked for the distance on the day when fast timings were par. The Muse and Mantra occupied the next two slots.

Lesser fancied Peppr got an excellent run along the rails with a furlong out and then quickened well to win the 1400 metres Shimsha Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 25 from Rosie`s Dream who took a long time to get into rhythm. Though Rosie`s Dream finished with a big run, the wining post came a trifle soon for Rosie`s Dream. Favourite Magnetic Power never looked like obliging though he ran in front bunch.

All Proof had failed to run to expectations last time out over seven furlongs but over the extended trip of a mile well backed to win the Hyderabad Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The fancied runner got the better of Gayle Storm with a rail skimming run from last position and got stronger close home to win with a measure of comfort. Nation`s Glory was third.

Murcilago looked invincible in the 1400 metres Haveri Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 and the Monnappa trainee justified the short priced quoted on the three year old when winning the race with ease from Catwalk Queen and Delta Delight.

Well backed Summer Sensation finished strongly to edge past Fortunate One to win the 1200 metres Penambur Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Queen`s Cruise who was in striking position right through the race weakened the final furlong to eventually finish third. Neil Darashah trained Quarter Cask swamped the opposition in the lower division of the race with Attractor and Our Commander finishing far behind.
