Congressional impressive in Panchshil Million

By: Frankel   September 14 , 2014

Satellite and Congressional had both imposing credentials in their own way. For one Satellite is the daughter of Derby winning Set Alight and had a good educational run earlier in the season. With that run benefit, she was expected to romp home in the seven furlong race. Congressional on the other had was from the last crop of Razeen and her dam was Kerataka whose previous produce at Europe had been a graded race winner. On paddock looks, Congressional stood out though her sporting bandages may have deterred many from backing her with conviction. The odds on Satellite shortened while that of Congressional expanded dramatically.

Shivaliks Glory who herself has interesting pedigree set a fast pace as the field set out for the seven furlong trip with Mystic Romance and Saporelli in close attendance while Congressional was a few lengths adrift with Satellite racing immediately behind. Jockey Sandesh steadily bridged the lead and was ready to take over the running inside the final two furlongs. Congressional quickened when the jockey shook the reins and opened up a lead which turned out to be a winning one as Satellite found it hard to cover up the leeway though she did manage to come less than a length of the eventual winner. Shivaliks Glory stayed on to finish third and her turn will come before long. Congressional appears to be a good type of youngster. Satellite was unfortunate to run into a horse of immense merit.

The sensational improvement in the performance of Hawker took everyone by surprise in the 1600 metres Yana Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Hawker had finished third to Westphalia with Haunting Moments who had run second on that occasion also in the fray though she was penalized rather harshly for her runner up berth. La Femme Fleur was strongly backed to win but the favourite, after leading into the straight, just packed up and finished down the field. Hawker who made swift progress around the final bend outclassed the rest to win by a widening margin eight lengths over late rallying Glorious Opinion and Shining Path. Hawker was not winning out of turn but her dramatic improvement was something that came against the run of expectations.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Angeling recorded an impressive win in the 1800 metres Glensanda Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Sandesh had Angeling settled in about the third position as Cartel did the job of pace setter. Angeling took over the running at the top of the straight with Belmont ranging alongside. Though Angeling looked like she may come under pressure, Angeling spurted away to record an emphatic win. Belmont packed up without a trace. Savage Garden showed some flourish towards the close to take the second spot ahead of Pumba.

In a swiftly changing scenario, Lex Luthor covered plenty of leeway in the straight to put his head ahead of Zambian at the post. Blackbean came in for inspired support and was backed down from a higher quote. Blackbean disappointed after bringing the field into view for the homestretch. Rising Wave then shaped like a winner but in the final moments of the race, there was a total transformation with Lex Luthor winning in a cluster finish of four horses.
After two disappointing efforts, Greek God resumed his winning ways. Greek God hit the front straightaway by taking control of the J E Hughes Trophy; a race for horses rated 60 to 86, and won by over eight lengths. Pepe Senior ran on from behind to edge out In The Limelight for the third slot.

Yash Narredu drove out Backstreet Bay to stave off the late bid of Alectar in the 1400 metres in aptly named Act In Time Plate, a race for horses rated 1 to 26. Yash pushed Backstreet Bay in time to take over the running approaching the final bend and opened up a healthy lead which helped the fancied runner to beat Alectar who took time to warm up but closed with menacing strides.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Desert Rage was backed to the exclusion of the rest and the favourite did not give anxious moments to her supports by spurting clear of the rest in the final furlong of the 1000 metres So Perfect Plate. Royal Sapphire held off Indispensable for the runner up berth.

Last outing surpriser Abedrus was in receipt of unprecedented betting to repeat in the 1200 metres Ismail Khan Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Though the four year old was drawn wide and was unable to move towards the rails, apprentice jockey Bhawani Singh was unperturbed. He drove out the favourite on the wide outside to get the better of rank outsider Ancient Treasure to land the spoils. Crossfire ran into place money.
