Favourites dominate the show yet again at Malakpet

By: Tippu Sultan   September 14 , 2014

Sunday`s races at Malakpet were dominated by favourites. The feature event of the day, the Police Cup, a Category I race which was run in two divisions saw some alteration to the script. While Beau Ideal won the upper division of the race at 5 to 1, the lower division of the race was won by favourite Tejaswini which was subsequently disqualified resulting in Silver Crown winning in the Stewards room at fancy odds.

Beau Ideal went on a start to finish mission in the upper division of the Police Cup and appeared to be vulnerable inside the final furlong. However, the lesser fancied runner came up with a second wind and skipped away from the rest to establish a winning lead. Favourite Odalis was not favorably placed and had to cover plenty of leeway on the front runner which was going to be a herculean task given the fact that raw apprentice Kunal Bande was guiding her fortunes. However, the five year old closed home with a rush which helped her bridge the gap considerably and also enabled her to get past Meg for the runner up berth in a cluster finish that saw four horses almost finish in a line.

The lower division of the race saw favourite Tejaswini just about lasting out despite relentless pressure applied by rank outsider Silver Crown whose jockey Mark relied more on the whip than getting response through a hand drive. Tejaswini crossed over toward the rails from the outside draw soon after jump out and in the process tightened the field on the inside, causing jostling, resulting in jockey Akshay Kumar being tossed out from Make Your Day. Tejaswini won the race in a tight finish but was not so lucky in the Stewards room as Tograllu was held guilty of dangerous ride on the favourite. Jockey Imran Khan was fined Rs 5000 by the Stewards for his carelessness which caused a chain reaction in the inside but Tograllu ended up getting suspended for four race days for his indiscretion of cutting in rather sharply from the outside position.

Jockey Imran Khan maneuvered a ground saving run on favourite Golden Arrow and managed to drive out the four year old filly to get the better of Shimmering Ice in the final stride of the 1100 metres Astana Plate (Div I), a Category II race. Lips Locking was third. Laxman Singh`s Ray of Light who was running after a longish absence from the track, bounced backed to winning form by claiming the lower division of the race, giving a drubbing to the opposition. Ray of Light who is half sister to the celebrated In The Spotlight has shown her liking for shorter trips. She led all the way before leaving the field stranded to win the lower division of the race from Drum Beat.

Shamsuddin trained Baashagar looked overwhelmingly superior in the 1600 metres Faridoon S Chenoy Memorial Cup, a Category II race. After being eased in fourth position as Natalia did the pace setting, Baashagar steadily moved up approaching the final bend and then broke away from the pack to win by eight lengths over San Ramon and Ice Barrier. Natalia weakened to finish fourth.

Prasad Raju`s Rebellion engaged the front running favourite Symbol of Choice in a stiff battle for supremacy before surging ahead in the final moments of the 1100 metres Malvado Plate (Div I), a race for three year olds.

Ponte Verdi had no problem in winning the 1200 metres Madanna Plate, a Category III race quite capably with a start to finish dash. True Scholar kept company till the final furlong before fading out of contention. Khalis Gold came up with a late rally to finish second.

Anant Vatsalya trained Kohinoor Punch who was well backed along with Vijays Splendour to win the 2200 metres Nizam Sagar Cup, a Category III race, came from the last position at the final bend to get past her adversary in the final furlong and won pulling up.
