Spider Man keeps Solomon at bay

By: Frankel   September 20 , 2014

Faisal Abbas trained Spider Man showed his prowess over a more suitable trip of six furlongs by keeping the strong challenge of Solomon at bay in the Tattersalls Million, a rich terms race for three year olds, the feature event of Saturday`s races. The race is sponsored by Tattersalls which is the nodal bloodstock agency in England.

In racing the betting ring is the best barometer of shape of things to come on the race track. The betting ring is also misleading more often than not. Classic Moment who had recorded a smashing debut win at Mumbai was backed with such conviction that it was difficult to believe the blind trust on the horse which was running for the first time on the Pune track. The three year olds generally do well with the benefit of a race run on the Pune track which has underfoot conditions quite unlike other tracks. Added to that was the fact that the weight of the horse as displayed on the TV monitors showed an increase of 17 kgs over the previous winning run. That indicated that the horse could be far from desired fitness.

In the event, jockey Dashrath Singh seemed to be in a tearing hurry as he bolted to the front on the favourite so much so that the first horse to pack up at the top of the straight was the Shiraz Sunderji ward. Polydences who was handily placed along with Spider Man quickened for home with Solomon beginning to essay a strong challenge on the outside of these two horses. Under the driving finish of Srinath, Spider Man produced a strong acceleration which took him past Polydences. Solomon came up with a late rally but it cut no ice with the lesser fancied runner who had something to spare at the finish. Polydences stayed on to finish third ahead of Full Moon. Should the club introduce a rule not to permit horses to race if they weigh more than 12 kgs over their previous run is something that the club can ponder in the interest of unsuspecting race goers.

Malesh Narredu trained Delightful Lady had recorded a runaway win in the lowest class and then had run into a superior horse like Tatiana and finished second best. Though she had good credentials going into 1600 metres Nationalistic Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46, Speed King was the betting race with appreciable money also coming the way of last start winner Al Shamsheer. Al Shamsheer expended his energy too soon for comfort packing up at the top of the straight after doing the front running. Speed King then cruised into the lead but his lead was short lived as Delightful Lady engaged him in a battle for supremacy and got stronger close home. Ricochet was a well beaten third. After a couple of dismal efforts, Pesi Shroff trained Archimedes showed some vigor in his performance when he chased Cha Cha Cha in the straight and got the better of the favourite with a furlong to go in the race to win at nourishing odds in the lower division of the race. Lhotse was putting in good work towards the close.

Quite often jockey Zervan has lost races by his peculiar pace judgment. Despite riding bottom weighted Reynolds who was also the overwhelming favourite to win the 2400 metres Highland Rule Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, he rode the horse in exaggerated check and left himself too much of ground to cover on Okavango. Reynolds managed to get the better of long time leader in the shadow of the post. Such tactics are fraught with danger especially when the pace of the race is a crawl. It could also spell trouble for the rider if the horse were to lose. The Ministerian was a close third.

The odds drift on favourite Zander in the 1200 metres Flaming Ace Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46, threw confusion in the minds of punters who prefer to back horses whose odds come down in the ring. Zander however was in earnest and managed to stave off a spirited late rally by Pepito to land the spoils by the proverbial whisker. Earth Tamer who did aggressive running in front was involved in the three horse finish. You can trust Antia to pull a fast one when least expected. It is not that Wind And Stars was winning the lower division of the race against the form book. It is just that punters are scared to back his horses with conviction as he enters several horses in the same and to guess which one puts his/her best foot forward becomes a risky speculation. Lucky Pineapple was a hot tip in the race course as almost everyone seemed to be unanimous in voicing that the three year old colt would record an encore. Wind And Stars who led from the start as is the case with most winners of Antia, resolutely held on to win from Lucky Pineapple. Lucky Charm showed some zest while finishing third.

The change of name appeared to have brought luck to Thoughts of You as the second favourite enjoyed every yard of the 2000 metres trip of Cardinal Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, by easily measuring the front running Strawberry Crush in the run in for home to record a handsome win. Malkia showed some spark to cover ground from the back to finish third.

Square Moon just about managed to get the better of late finishing Bethpage to claim the 2000 metres Enaksi Plate, a race for three year olds. Elaheh had the first run on her opponents but could not prolong her stay in front till the very end. Square Moon shaped to win with a measure of comfort but a late flourish from Bethpage who changed course from outside to inside infuse some excitement to the race. Jockey N S Parma who rode the runner up tried to add some anxiety to those who had backed the winner by lodging a frivolous objection against the rider of the winner.

After placing twice during the season, Rajendra trained Dhiskhkyaon romped home in the 1400 metres Proteus Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, with a comprehensive start to finish victory. Those who believed that they could go To The Moon soon realized that they were chasing hell when the well backed six year old mare lost all her chances at the gate itself and was never in the hunt. Copperglow held off Wind of the Hills for the runner up berth.
