Zachary trounces opposition in S A Poonawalla Million

By: Frankel   September 21 , 2014

Janardhan trained Zachary simply trounced the opposition with unexpected ease in the 1600 metres Gr 2 S A Poonawalla Multi-Million, a terms race for three year olds, the feature event of Sunday`s races. The fancied runners found Zachary too fast for comfort as they were flat footed at the top of the straight. The victory of the progeny of Kingda Ka was no doubt outstanding but it remains to be seen whether the opposition he beat is run of the mill or he indeed is a horse capable of top notch performances when he steps up in class.

There was no outstanding runner in the fray and Flashing Chieftain who had twice finished second best to good type of horses was backed strongly to win along with top weighted Vision of Romance. The rest were available at lucrative odds. Royal Passion did the job of a pace setter as Zervan eased Zachary in the second position with the rest in striking positions behind. Royal Passion brought the field into the homestretch with Zachary cruising up. In a trice, Zachary had gone clear of Royal Passion while the rest stayed behind unable to improve position. Zachary went away for an effortless win by five lengths over Royal Passion who stayed on to neck out Zodiac for the runner up berth. Flashing Chieftain raced flat and finished in the rut. Vision of Romance was no better.

Altaf Hussain trained Dreamz Unlimited ran green well into the straight before slipping away in the final furlong to win with ease over Joleene in the 1000 metres Viloo C Poonawalla Gold Trophy, a race for three year olds. Favourite Khaleefa showed no improvement over his previous run as he showed no speed when it mattered the most and lost even the runner up position to Joleene.

Exactly had recorded an impressive win in her previous outing and considering the fact that she was by Arabian Gulf who endows his progeny with stamina, her chances to repeat were considered as being excellent in the 2400 metres Secret Memory Plate. Oxbridge was the other horse who was in betting consideration of race goers while Unico Corazon who had won well last time was another expected to figure at the finish as he was by Epsom Derby winner Authorized. However, Unico Corazon ran a dismal race and was beaten well before the final bend. Sword of Honour attempted runaway tactics but ran out of steam in the straight. Exactly who was handily placed then shot ahead and had no problem in staving off the challenge of Oxbridge.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Haunting Moment who had ran well below expectations last time out made amends in the 1600 metres Neona Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86 just about getting the better of Running Sun who made the entire running but lost in the final moments of the race. Running Sun rolled out of the rails under pressure and this perhaps made a critical difference to the outcome of the race. Celtic King raced upfront without threatening the top two finishers.

In a three horse finish, Dallas Todywalla trained Mint Approach finally bound her bearings over a sprint in the Mysore Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Mint Approach had been tried over longer trips unsuccessfully but over a sprint, she bounced back to winning form albeit in a tight finish. Mint Approach shook off the front running Celsius inside the final 350 metres and surged ahead. However, the four year old filly had to be fully ridden out to contain the challenge of Rio who made giant strides along the rails while Mykonos, after gracing the wrong end of the field, flew home on the wide outside. A short head and head helped Mint Approach pull it off over Mykonos and Rio.

Altamash Ahmed trained Starry Moment justified the favouritism in the 1800 metres Eloise Plate, a race for lowest rated horses. Starry Moment looked vulnerable all the way in the straight as Proto Banus essayed a strong challenge and even put his head in front at one stage. However, Starry Moment dug deep into his reserves and pulled off that bit extra in the capable of hands of apprentice jockey Bhawani Singh to win comfortably in the end.

When horses from trainer Antia are in the fray, it is hard to predict the outcome of the race. Romeo was the strongly fancied horse in the 1400 metres Rao Saheb Kedari Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 but it was Ice Zone who won against the run of expectations. Ice Zone had finished last out of 10 runners last time out but was quietly backed by people in the know. Apprentice jockey Prasad had Ice Zone dictate the pace from the start and the progeny of Major Impact held off unfancied Rubens. The latter in turn was a short head ahead of Halle while Romeo was not spotted at the busy end of the race.

These days when jockey I Pasha is declared to ride, the horses invariably figure at the finish even if they don`t attract any money in the betting ring. Pasha very nearly brought off a big upset on Incentio in the 1000 metres Sea Runner Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 but Antia trained Ice Skates just about prevailed by a whisker in the final stride of the race, the riding of Bhawani Singh making a crucial difference to the outcome of the race.
