Beyond Thankful wins feature in Stewards room

By: Stay Thirsty   October 18 , 2014

Bipin Salvi trained Beyond Thankful won the 1400 metres Gayatri Devi Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s races in Stewards room. Precious Replica had originally won the race but in the process of overhauling the field, rolled over to the rails, bumping Beyond Thankful who in turn knocked out Artic Rose who was hugging the rails, out of contention. Though Precious Replica was a deserving winner, the filly was disqualified by the Stewards for the careless riding of jockey Vivek which had the potential of turning dangerous.

Spark of Beauty surged ahead from the start with Crrisp settled in second position ahead of Arctic Rose, Precious Replica and Beyond Thankful. The last named came into contention with a ground saving run but was hindered in his progress by Precious Replica who, under the left handed whipping of jockey Vivek rolled over to the rails causing severe interference to the two horses on the inside finally resulting in the three year old filly being disqualified.

Trainer Padmanabhan had a double through Torch Bearer and Aralyn. Torch Bearer went into the 1600 metres Forester`s Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, as a strongly backed favourite ahead of Passing Fulcrum who was bidding for a hat-trick. Torch Bearer moved swiftly from the wide outside draw to take over the running within the first furlong and set a brisk pace. In the homestretch, Torch Bearer shifted out under pressure and looked vulnerable when Passing Fulcrum covered ground swiftly and came abreast. However, Torch Bearer pulled away in the final stages of the race to win comfortably. Queen who cut pace with the eventual winner stayed on to finish third ahead of Majestic Opinion who looked far from ready. Torch Bearer should mature into a better quality performer with more racing experience.

Aralyn`s only career run had been in the summer season where she had finished second to Bold Majesty. The filly hadn`t run for a long time because of various niggles that she had. Now running in the 1400 metres D H Dasappa Memorial Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds, she appeared a cut above the rest as the horses she had beaten in her debut run had moved up in the scales. As such, Aralyn was quoted at miserly odds. Aralyn showed lack of racing experience as she lost pace in the early part and then had to be switched on the wide outside to get a clear run. The daughter of Razeen came up with a big run to get past the front running Our Little Dragon to record a comfortable win. Aralyn should progress swiftly on the handicap scale if she stays free from the problems that had restricted her runs thus far in her career. Allez Royale was faraway third.

Sajid Quereshi trained Capri who had been relocated from Mumbai, was running in a race after 356 days but her obvious class and good preparation ensured that she went into the 1400 metres Setia Teknologi Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 as a firm favourite. Capri led from the start and looked beat when Ohiyesa drew level with her in the final furlong. However, Capri dug deep into her reserves and managed to produce that bit extra which saw her pull away. Scaramouche ran on well to finish third. Hard To Pin Down bolted riderless after being loaded into the gates and completed the course and hence was withdrawn from the fray.

Warren Singh trained Manta Ray was well backed to claim the 1200 metres Gool & Soli Poonawalla Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Manta Raya did not disappoint as the well backed four year old gelding easily accounted for the front running Delilah in the straight and stretched away for an impressive win over Delilah and late finishing Jet Set Go. Nityanand`s Cadogan managed to get the better of front running Lake Emerald in the closing stages of the race to land the spoils in the lower division of the race. Favourite Quarter Cask was a well beaten third.

Lesser fancied Cute Beast won the 1400 metres R M Puttanna Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 0 to 25, with a start to finish mission easily containing the challenge of favourite Aqua Aria and late finishing Glamour Boy. The lower division of the race was won by rank outsider Hilton who had the race firmly in his control from the start and then skipping away from the rest to win comfortably. Passion Flame found the eventual winner too good and had to settle for the runner up berth.

With the withdrawal of Spiritual Blue from the fray, Always On Top was the firm favourite for the 1400 metres Bottolonda Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Castlebar led from the start but began to drift out as apprentice jockey Sarvan Kumar failed to keep the filly on an even keel. Though Always On Top was taken out, John managed to drive out the favourite to a resolute win. The jockey of Always United changed course in anticipation of Castlebar shifting out and hence the objection by jockey Melvyn against Sarvan Kumar for interference was overruled by the Stewards.
