Pursuit of Fame has it easy in Golconda Leger

By: Tippu Sultan   October 20 , 2014

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Pursuit of Fame made good the withdrawal of Isn`t She Special on veterinary grounds with an aggressive start to finish tactics over the grueling trip of 2800 metres and won the Gr 2 Golconda St Leger, the last classic of the monsoon racing season on Monday.

Barring Roses In Bloom who had won the Golconda Derby in January and lost form inexorably thereafter, the rest of the runners lacked class. The best staying horse in the fray Pursuit of Fame thus benefitted the most and recorded a win after a wait of 303 days. The last win of Pursuit of Fame had come in Bangalore over a trip of nine furlongs in the 40 to 65 category.

Reynolds who had recorded a hat-trick of wins during the Mumbai season over long distance races and won his last outing at Pune, was fancied strongly to win though the gelding hadn`t beaten any horse of significant achievement back home. As such, the one sided support on him in a field which lacked class was surprising as winner picking was a hazardous guess.

John took Pursuit of Fame on a start to finish mission followed by Arrogant Approach, Sovereign Rule, Reynolds and Roses In Bloom. The order remained the same till the very end except that Sovereign Rule swapped places with Reynolds in the end. Pursuit of Fame had a good break going into the final furlong with Arrogant Approach trying hard but unable to cover the leeway. The others struggled behind. Pursuit of Fame thus had it easy and won with comfort over Arrogant Approach who stayed on to retain the second spot ahead of Reynolds who was flat footed. It was thus a 1-2 finish for the Dashmesh Stud Farm.

Pradeep Chouhan drove out Ashwa Shakti with all the resources at his command to eke out a narrow win over Meg in the final strides of the 1100 metres Bangalore Turf Club Trophy, a Category I race. Meg appeared set for a win when the six year old mare opened up a good lead in the final 100 metres of the race but Ashwa Shakti closed home with a big rush and managed to neck out the front runner. Beau Ideal, though well positioned, did not accelerate enough to make a difference to the verdict and had to settle for the third place. Secret Angel led from the start and held sway till deep into the final furlong before weakening to finish fourth.

Zoheb Shaikh trained Rosemonde who has been pretty consistent right through the season having notched up two wins, returned to winning ways by claiming the 1200 metres Trainer P Pratap Reddy Memorial Cup, a Category II race with a start to finish mission staving off the late rally of Rubyonrails. Go For Gold was third. Favourite Camborne played up a lot while being loaded, was examined and certified fit to race by the vets. Camborne perhaps had expended his energy while being fractious and ran listlessly and finished off the frame.

The heavily supported Vijays Splendour expended so much of energy by his runaway tactics that it would have been a surprise if he had lasted out and won the 2200 metres Mystical Cup, a Category III race. Vijays Splendour led till the final furlong before running out of steam. Star Player easily passed him in the final furlong and won by a widening margin of five lengths over Killer Instinct and Vijays Splendour.

Favourite Aware had no problem in justifying the strong support that he received in the betting ring by having the race firmly in his grasp from the start and gave an arm chair ride to victory for apprentice Tanwar in the Elite Zone Plate (Div I), a Category III race. Transition and Flower of Temba occupied the next two slots. The lower division of the race saw favourite Spirited let down huge expectations. The favourite failed to pick up speed when needed most and finished poorly. Symbol of Victory just about held on to win from Graceland and Amazing Weapon in a three horse photo finish.

Dad`s Dollar who raced a handy second into the straight managed to keep the challenge of favourite Torremolinos at bay to win the 1400 metres Cape Knight Plate, a Category III race. Torremolinos came up with a strong challenge in the final stages of the race but drifted out under pressure which hurt her chances. Khoshgel was a well beaten third.

Laxman Singh trained Flames of Forest had an uncontested lead in front and was not troubled by any of the others which helped the favourite to record a comfortable win in the 1000 metres Blue Ice Plate (Div I), a Category II race. Queen of the Stars chased the eventual winner without giving hope and settled for the runner up berth.
