Woman O War wins at lucrative odds

By: Tippu Sultan   October 21 , 2014

Srinivas Reddy trained Woman O War produced striking acceleration to get the better of favourite Advocate General to win the 1100 metres Dodla Pratap Chander Reddy Memorial Million, a race for two-year olds, the feature event of Monday`s races held at Malakpet.

To term the victory of Woman O War as upset as the commentator said would be wrong because all the 10 runners in the fray were all running for the first time and hence their potential was something that could be gauged only after the race. It is just that Advocate General had the benefit of a mock race and strong preparation which resulted in solid support for the two year old son of Stern Opinion who is a first season stallion standing at Capodica Stud Farm in Telangana which was incidentally started by the late Pratap Chander Reddy whose daughter Shriya Reddy sponsored this race in memory of her father who was a great racing enthusiast with fascination for pedigree details.

Advocate General was taken on a start to finish mission by Pradeep Chouhan and perhaps in his anxiety to get to the post, he went too quick which resulted in the horse slackening close home. Woman O War who was in about the fifth position at the final bend, came five horses wide, picked up splendid acceleration and passed the hapless front runner with ease. Byron Bay who chased the favourite right through the race finished third ahead of That`s My Darling.

Vittal Deshmukh trained prolific performer Machiavellianism got a gift race as he took on three modest performers in the 1400 metres Dundoo Ekambar Memorial Cup, a Category I race. Chouhan had Machiavellianism in third position as Azaiba set a nice pace followed by Black Bolt with Vijaykeerti tailed off last. Machiavellianism steadily moved up in the straight and had the race sewn up in the final furlong with minimum of effort. Azaiba held off the late rally of Black Bolt for the runner up berth.

Desire recorded her third win of the season easily accounting for the opposition in the 1400 metres Ivanjica Cup, a Category II race. After tracking Green Jewel in the early part of the race, Desire kicked clear in the straight with hardly any challenge emanating from the opponents to win by a widening margin of six lengths over Golden Essence and Green Jewel.

Anupam Sharma trained Fairy Emperor finished with a big run from about the fourth position at the final furlong to collar the front running favourite Ray of Hope to record a facile win in the 2400 metres Nawab Arshad Ali Khan Memorial Cup, a Category II race. Ray of Hope attempted to win start to finish and enjoyed a lead of over three lengths till going into the final furlong but had nothing left in her thereafter. Ray of Hope finished fourth as Wedding Gift and Ice Barrier surged past her in the closing stages of the race.

Favourite Sprint Saloni scooted into the lead inside the final 200 metres and had no problem in keeping the spirited challenge of Scholar Gypsy at bay in the 1100 metres Forest Treasure Plate (Div I), a Category III race for horses rated below 25. Mrinalini proved too good in the lower division of the race winning start to finish in the hands of apprentice Kunal Bunde by a distance over Hard Hit and Royal Glow.

Anupam Sharma`s Mukhtar recorded an encore winning the Blue Ice Plate (Div II), a Category II race with a start to finish mission. Mukhtar encountered no opposition en route to an easy win. Fair And Square nosed out Big Boss for the second spot.

Favourite Crown Royal gave anxious moments to her supporters when she took the final turn wide and ran on the outer rail despite which she proved too good for Light Blue Sky who ran straight as an arrow and claimed the 1600 metres Onnu Onnu Onnu Plate, a Category III race. Gentle Chief was a well beaten third.
