Sofast romps home with a late flourish

By: Stay Thirsty   November 19 , 2014

Michael Eshwer trained Sofast came home with a late flourish to edge past Rising Rani to record a facile win in the 1400 metres C P Chinnappa Memorial Trophy, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. Rising Rani had shaped like a winner when she measured the front runners in the final furlong but was floored by the patented late dash of Sofast which was timed perfectly this time out by South African jockey Keanen Steyn.

Precious Replica came in for spirited support to pull it off and the favourite in earnest shot into the lead with a furlong out, giving hopes for her supporters. In the meanwhile Rising Rani who was gracing the wrong end of the field covered the leeway swiftly in the straight and surged ahead. Sofast who was a couple of lengths adrift of Rising Rani also found her wonted rhythm as she charged home. On a few occasions, Sofast had fallen short finding the winning post coming a wee bit soon but this time out, she did not run out of ground.

Steyn was successful on Darashah trainee Bandito in the 1200 metres Big Deal Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65, producing a similar effort by coming way of the pace and weaving his way through the crowded field and then bringing the four year old gelding on the wide outside with a strong run. Bandito held off Galaxy Queen who came home with a big run only to find the lesser fancied runner hit the wire a fraction ahead. Feroz Khan trained Country`s Beauty stormed into the lead from the word `go` and did not let anyone come near her shadow as she checked in by a widening margin of five lengths over Abbas Dreams and Jolie in the lower division of the race.

Last start winner Visionist from the yards of trainer Bobby toyed with the opposition in the 1200 metres Wynad Plate, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Visionist easily overhauled the front running Class Is Class inside the final furlong and was not unduly extended when kicking away to win by over six lengths. Royal Shaan was second ahead of Class Is Class while Mr Carpe who drifted to the edge of the grass track just about managed not to slide into the outer sand track.

C V G K Kishore`s Spiritual Blue had the field beat with about 200 metres left in the race and had no problem in claiming the 1600 metres Great Cherisma Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The well backed Nanuk found the winner too good for comfort. Gayle`s Storm who had come in for strong support lost considerable ground at the start and though he made up lost ground, he was a spent force by the time the race came on the boil.

Kishore saddled a double as earlier in the day he had led in Rocketeer who had no problem in winning the 1200 metres Kakanakote Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, having the field beat well before the final furlong. Flirting King held off Little Athena for the runner up berth.

Tejaswi trained Neron lasted out to win the 1400 metres Manasagangotri Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Tandav who was sluggish at the start, covered ground and came home with a rush only to see Neron escape to victory. Caterina was a well beaten third. Srinivas trained Jump In The Red went on a start to finish mission, opening up a healthy lead from the start which helped the fancied runner to pull it off in the lower division of the race. Rosie`s Dream, who was loitering behind, suddenly picked up steam and very nearly caught up with the front runner but fell short by a neck.

First season sire West Virginia, standing at Nakul Stud Farm, had a two year old winner through Siddhani who waged a resolute battle with Red Magnum and prevailed in the 1200 metres Nanjangud Plate for trainer Rakesh.
