Trainer Manvendra Singh`s ward, Cohiba, took his seven rivals by a surprise as the three year-old-colt had the measure of the heavily wagered horses – like Copernicus and Shourisha – in the 1,600m Horendra Kristo Dutt Memorial Cup, on Tuesday. Jockey Trevor Patel, who partnered the winner, finished the day with a priced treble, having also guided trainer Bharath Singh`s pair of Zegna and Snow White to victory in their respective events.
The 6-1 chance in the betting was held back in the fifth berth while Scartella made most of the running as the heavily fancied pair of Shourisha and Copernicus graced the wrong-end of the field. Cohiba took over the running and was comfortably ahead, inside the last furlong of the race, setting a tough task for the two public choices who covered the leeway but fell well short at the wire.
Trevor`s day started with the victory of Bharath`s 15-20 hot favourite, Zegna, who made every post of the 1,600m Arisen Handicap a winning one as Vijay` Singh`s Magical and Vikash Jaiswal`s El Cid made a futile chase.
Bharath`s 5-1 chance, Snow White, in the 1,100m Aloritz Handicap, provided Trevor the opportunity complete the coveted treble. The four-year-old filly was also taken to the front and she frustrated Vikash`s Fie Falcon`s and his jockey A. Sandesh`s efforts all through the journey.
Sandesh was engaged to ride four horses of Vikash but the champion jockey could manage to deliver the goods only on a heavily wagered Luck Luck Lucky in the 1,200m Fiddler Handicap. The 12-10 favourite was ridden well off the pace but came with a rush taking the rail-side route in the last 200m of the race to down Bharath`s Impression and Shafiq Khan`s Something Stupid.
Weak handling of jockey Arman Khan cost him and trainer Robert Gowli, the 1,100m Mossy Bear Plate, the baby race. Gowli`s last time out runaway winner, Gimme Credit, -- quoted at 14-10, was taken to a start-to-finish mission but faltered in the final 150m when Javed Khan`s debutante, Aerona (Shailesh Shinde-up), covered much ground to snatch the verdict virtually at the post.
The day started with the narrow victory of trainer Patrick Quinn`s A`Ma Jaju over the 6-4 favourite, Sartaj in the 1,600m Glen Muick Handicap. The Jaju was given a waiting race by jockey Surjeet Singh, and the horse powered his way to a narrow victory, after gracing the wrong of the field in the early half of thr journey.
