Duma bounces back to winning form

By: Stay Thirsty   December 17 , 2014

Barring an odd aberration, Michael Eshwer trained Duma has been a top notch performer and she bounced back to record a facile win in the 1400 metres Dr M N Doreswamy Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s races. The prolific performer was conceding chunks of weight to all her opponents including Bold Police who had come down a lot in scales but Duma overcame all adversities and was getting stronger at the finish.

Easily the best trainer at Mysore, Eshwer turned out Duma in impeccable condition. Though she lacked early speed and raced in the rear group along with Bold Police, she showed immense resolution and staved off a spirited bid by Bold Police who essayed a strong challenge in the final furlong, even heading marginally at one stage. Duma was getting into her wonted rhythm in the closing stages of the race so much so that the jockey could ease the horse well before crossing the winning post. Bold Police showed some spark and this could help him to enter winner`s enclosure after what has been a painfully long wait.

Barring the first race of the day, the other six races went the way of public fancies. Melvyn Maseyk took long shot Caterina on a start to finish mission in the 1600 metres Mangalagangotri Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Caterina enjoyed an uncontested lead and had a good break going into the final furlong and this ensured that the six year old mare would have a free run to the winning post. Gayle`s Storm tried hard but found the front runner gone beyond reach.

Eshwer trained Constantine recorded an encore with ease in the 1100 metres Brig C D Mohan Memorial Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Constantine forced his way through a tight gap between front running Jolie and Bourbon Street and managed to storm clear inside the final 200 metres to record an encore. Bourbon Street held off Lake Emerald for the runner up berth while Jolie weakened to finish fourth. Favourite Majestic Queen had a firm grip on the lower division of the race, leading from the word `go` and quickening well in the final furlong to win with ease from Anchal Beauty and late rallying Young Gallant.

Zareer Darashah trained Hallelujah took time to warm up but once she did so, the three year old filly bounced clear of front running Castle Bar to record an encore in the 1200 metres Planters Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Chandini, who lost some ground at the start, nevertheless recovered ground to eventually finish in the money. Santosh Rao trained Happiness who went into the lead with about 300 metres left in the race managed to reach the safety of the winning post before For Your Eyes Only could overhaul her with a late flourish. Stone Warrior too showed some zest when finishing third. Favourite First Light lost considerable ground at the start and though the favourite made a rally, she had expended her energy in doing so and faded out of contention in the final furlong.

Last start winner Secret Missile let down as he just packed up after leading the field into the final 200 metres of the 1600 metres Vani Vilas Sagar Plate and his jockey eased up the horse possibly feeling that something was amiss. Precious Replica who gained ascendancy inside the distance post managed to pull it off from late finishing Rising Rani, Absolute Brave and Spinning Chakram who almost finished in a line.
