Speed Six pulverizes the opposition

  January 30 , 2015

Padmanabhan trained Speed Six pulverized the opposition to win the Gr 3 Sprinters Trial Stakes, the feature event for second year running on Friday. The progeny of Burden of Proof who was back in his comfort zone of a six furlong trip, led the field from the start and skipped away from the rest in the final furlong to record an impressive win in a smart timing. Jockey Trevor Patel could heave a sigh of relief for finally getting things right on Speed Six.

Trevor had come agonizingly close to winning on Speed Six in two Grade 1 races but eventually lost by a whisker. The first was when he was just making the cut while the second one was in the Sprinters Cup held at Kolkata. On couple of other occasions he rode Speed Six, the combination invariably failed. This time out however there were no hiccups as he dictated the right kind of pace and left the others struggling for speed when he quickened for home in the straight.

Speed Six was backed strongly to resume his winning ways with support for Whispering Gallery and Shivalik Star being subdued. Speed Six broke off swiftly from draw number one and shook off his pursuer Shivalik Star in the run in for home and then stormed clear to win easily. Whispering Gallery made a late rally to edge past Shivalik Star for the runner up berth. The seven year old is now headed for the Sprinters Cup to be held at Mumbai. Success has eluded him in the Sprinters Cup by a close margin for the last two successive years.

Padmanabhan`s another ward Valiant Spirit made an impressive debut in the 1200 metres Becket Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. The well bred daughter of Multidimensional looked far from ready and seemed to be in a spot of bother as she was outpaced in the early part. All In and Sheer Luck raced ahead. Midway through the race, Valiant Spirit began to get into her rhythm and rapidly covered up the leeway. After a brief duel in the straight with All In, Valiant Spirit sped away to win in the manner of a good type of youngster in a good timing. All In ran on to take the second spot ahead of Sheer Luck.

Aravind Ganapathy trained Native Force had run behind Anarosa in his last outing and that run was encouraging enough to get him one-sided support in the 2000 metres Forever Elegance Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. There was also support for King Glorieux and Turf Tactics. Sandesh had Native Force race in a forward position before pushing him to take over the running at the top of the straight. Native Force at once picked up speed and was sighted a winner long way from home. King Glorieux went in futile chase of the favourite along with Turf Tactics but could only occupy the next two slots on the frame.
One more favourite went down the drain could well have been the refrain of punters but this was what the trainer of Ace Mesmerize proudly said for everyone to hear after the last race, the Brahmaputra Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The trainers these days have no remorse about how they let down the unsuspecting race goers because authority is now dared and ridiculed and not respected. For the record, Puttanna trained Carducci who had two pathetic efforts, came in for big support and duly produced a winning run. It was indeed a big gamble especially since the last few runs of Carducci showed no indication of reversal of form especially after Chetan Kalay with low win percentage was declared to ride. Right money makes the hare go while public money goes down the drain is something that one has come to accept these days with the moral fiber at an all time low. I Smile expended his energy by running freely in front but nevertheless saved the second place from the favourite. The lower division of the race saw favourite Masked Marvel put up a poor show, with Blues Legend winning at long odds at the expense of Cheddar Face.

Coolmore`s chances were ruined last time out due to poor jockeyship but with the benefit of a better jockey this time, the six year old mare made ample amends in the 1200 metres Hampi Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Cullinan for the third time running attracted big money only to let down again. Coolmore who was in the rear group, got the spaces in the straight to make her run. For a while Coolmore appeared to be in trouble. Once she got a clear run, Coolmore devoured ground and managed to get past Ungoogleable to record an easy win. Ungoogleable nosed out the late rallying Open Page for the runner up spot.
Inayathullah trained Vivid Impression had recorded a smashing win over Speed Hawk earlier in the season over seven furlongs but was in the next outing ambitiously campaigned in the Oaks. After a failed effort, she was brought back to the distance at which she had excelled and accordingly opened favourite for the 1400 metres Smt Saraswati Sajnani Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. However, the odds drifted out close to race time with Saltoro Ridge coming in for big support. In the event, Vivid Impression made a brilliant rally in the final furlong to get the better of front running Sakchi and Saltoro Ridge to win at nourishing odds.

Favourite Admired seemed to be in a spot of bother in the 1400 metres Lalitmahal Plate (Div I), a race for lowest rated horses but Trevor swiftly pushed the favourite to get a run along the rails. The filly had the speed to take the openings which proved decisive. Admired shot ahead and won from Above And Beyond with One To Note being a reluctant third. Lesser fancied Private Party produced a winning run with a furlong left and collared the front running Angela to claim the lower division of the race..
