King Charles wins on day of favourites

By: Tippu Sultan   February 23 , 2015

Laxman Singh trained King Charles asserted his superiority in the Gr 3 Alcock Arabian Million, a rich terms race for three year olds, the feature event of concluding day`s Hyderabad Winter races on Monday. The long card of dozen events favoured the punters who tend to chase the favourites. They could not have asked for better as favourite after favourite nailed bold colours to the mast.

King Charles had recorded a smashing win in his last outing and accordingly was given the status of a favourite. D K Ashish kept King Charles in a handy second position as debutant Masti attempted to win with an aggressive approach in front. Escalante graced the rear. Masti led the field deep into the straight but closer home succumbed to the onslaught of the favourite who went sailing clear and held off the late rally of Escalante.

Donald Netto trained Parade Queen has been in rousing form this season having notched up four wins including a hat-trick and was backed strongly ahead of Mrinalini to win the 1100 metres Oceanic Plate (Div I), a Category II race. The favourite obliged in the end but survived the late bid of Always Together by a whisker. The speedy Mrinalini led from the start with Parade Queen in hot pursuit. Inside the final furlong, Parade Queen measured Mrinalini and went ahead. Parade Queen who was declared the horse of the season later for her amazingly consistent performance during the season shaped to win comfortably survived a scare as she was nearly caught up with by Always Together who finished powerfully. There was an objection by Mukesh, the jockey of Mrinalini against the winner for squeezing him along the rails which cost him a possible winning chance. The objection was thrown out in quick time.

The lower division of the race saw both C Eleven and Numinous being recipients of spirited betting. In the event, C Eleven emerged the better of the two, thwarting the front running challenge of Numinous with a furlong left in the race. Symbol of Glory finished well towards the close to take the third slot. The winners of both the divisions were ridden by Louis Buezelin who thus signed off his second season in India on a winning note, having a fairly successful stint with 20 winners to his credit.

Satheesh trained Super Falcon claimed the 1200 metres Prince Mouzam Jah Bahabur Memorial Cup (Div I), a Category I race in an interesting finish. Super Falcon held the initiative going into the final furlong though he drifted out of a straight course providing favourite Decathlon a dream run on the inside. In the meanwhile, Ashok Chakra, from literally last position, came up with a powerful burst of speed. However, Super Falcon had enough reserves to last out and win from Ashoka Chakra and Decathlon who was beaten to the third slot. Laxman Singh`s Policy Maker, who had impressive form, had no issues in winning the lower division of the race. From a handy position at the top of the straight, Policy Maker unleashed a powerful run in the straight and went sailing clear to win with great deal of comfort. Emerald Reef occupied the second place returning rich dividends. Brahmani was third.

Satyanarayana trained Atlas Power was backed strongly to record an encore in the 1400 metres Patrons Cup (Div I), a Category III race. Atlas Power let Golden Phoenix do all the front running till the final furlong before putting pressure on the front runner. Golden Phoenix found no extra gear as Atlas Power collared him and went away for an easy win. Italian Cypress covered lot of ground in the straight to finish third. Vittal Deshmukh trained Strides of Luck was one big upset of the day, winning the lower division of the race. The long shot came home with a rush to get the better of Dancing Farha in the waning yards of the race. Favourite Aggressive Approach failed to live up to his name and finished a tame third.

Laxman Singh who had a rewarding season, saddled his third winner of the day through Vijay Sakhi in the concluding race, the 1000 metres Appeaser Plate (Div I), a Category III race. Vijay Sakhi had run behind Parade Queen in her last run and considering the latter`s subsequent performance, she looked a cinch. Vijay Sakhi produced a powerful run down the final furlong to win with great ease from Racing Ruler. Another Laxman Singh trainee Humraaj had no problem in winning the lower division of the race as a favourite, keeping the late challenge of Azazil at bay.

Jockey Pradeep Chouhan`s only winner of the day in the long card came through Hometown Hero who completed a hat-trick, leaving the rest stranded to claim the 1400 metres Rocky Plate, a Category II race by a widening margin of four lengths over Blue Eyed Babe and Flower Roll Up.

Srinivas Reddy trained Chal Dhannu Chal made a winning debut in the 1200 metres Wilkinson Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Chal Dhannu Chal easily overhauled the front running Moonwalker for an easy win. Favourite Wine N Dine was driven out to win the lower division of the race from late rallying Sketch of Beauty. Sayyara was faraway third.
