Star Formation wins on day of hard knocks for punters

By: Stay Thirsty   February 25 , 2015

The final day`s racing of Mysore Winter Racing Season had 11 events and when a card of this nature is framed, punters can only expect hard knocks as topsy-turvy results will be par for such a programme. In keeping with this trend, the 11 races produced fair bit of upsets with day`s feature, the 1400 metres Mysore City Trophy, a race for three year olds, being an exception, with on money favourite Star Formation claiming the event.

Star Formation was the shortest priced horse of the day as the three year old had recorded a smashing win last time out and was considered cut above for the locally based horses. Jockey Anil Baandal had Star Formation take over the running within the first furlong and the three year old daughter of China Visit kept on expanding the lead to finally check in by about five lengths from Sky Jasmine. Sufficient Proof raced better than previous time while finishing third.

Favourite Obelinna Princess flopped miserably in the 1600 metres Reshmi Art Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above, and long shot Society Music had it easy. Obelinna Princess had matched strides with better class horses at Bangalore and as such, her repeat win was considered a strong possibility. However, Obelinna Princess packed up as soon as she hit the front at the top of the straight and weakened to finish a poor fourth. Society Music who shot ahead with a furlong left in the race had something in hand when crossing the winning post ahead of late finishing Galaxy Queen who covered places and finished an eye-catching second ahead of Charming Knight.

Trainer Monnappa had a rich haul on the final day with a treble as apart from Society Music, he led in the winners through Miss International and Time Flies who both won at lucrative odds. Miss International showed up on the wide outside with a furlong to go in the 1200 metres Shimmering Gold Plate (Div I) and in a trice had left the field stranded to win by a widening margin of five lengths over Flying Tricolour who led the field till overhauled by the eventual winner. Aristomache was third. A big gamble was landed in the lower division of the race by trainer Booby whose Dreamliner had the field beaten long way from home by over four lengths. Precept was second saving the spot by a whisker over Zoe. The jockey of Dreamliner celebrated extravagantly the success by standing up on the horse long way from home and surely his crude display deserves a reprimand by the Stipes.

Monnappa`s another ward Time To Time had no problem in keeping the late finishing Happiness at bay to win the 1400 metres Nagpur Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. London Eye won the lower division of the race at big odds at the expense of favourite Grace And Glory.

Carissa who came in for sustained support in the 1400 metres Original Vel B Ashok Kumar Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65, won easily by bursting clear of the pack with 200 metres left in the race and won pulling up by five lengths. Class Above managed to beat Triple Victory for the runner up berth. The lower division of the race produced a dramatic finish with Strive And Serve who was loitering at the rear way off the pace along with Gayle`s Storm who was sluggish from the gates, overhauled all the front runners and were involved in an exciting finish. Stride And Serve held off Gayle`s Storm and Sivanta to land the spoils at huge odds.

After racing in about seventh position for early part of the race, C V G K Kishore trained Concentration steadily moved places approaching the final bend, was angled out at the top of the straight to get a clear and easily claimed the 1600 metres Manipal Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, at big odds. Robinhood Pandey pushed Gunpowder to the third place. The last named came in for big betting but let down huge expectations.

Kishore`a another ward Best Move engaged front running Supreme Strength in a stiff battle for supremacy and managed to get the nod in the closing strides of the race to win the 1100 metres Bhagamandala Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest class. Friends Forever got the better of Ophira in the closing moments of the race to claim the lower division of the race. Shining Fame rallied well in the end but missed the runner up berth by a whisker.
