Capilano wins feature at nourishing odds

By: Frankel   April 4 , 2015

Rajendra trained Capilano has this habit of springing a surprise at nourishing odds whenever his performance is taken for granted. Capilano who had won twice during the Pune racing season last year, bounced back to winning form after a couple of listless efforts by claiming the 1200 metres Kailashpat Singhania Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Saturday`s Mumbai races. The effect of lunar eclipse was felt by the faovurites who played truant.

The odds indicated that the race was an open affair and the connections of the contestants were not sure of their wards. Capilano, who was quoted at liberal odds, was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Dashrath Singh and the speedy son of Phoenix Tower who enjoyed an uncontested lead, stayed put there, distancing himself from the rest in the final furlong. Last outing winner Hidden Asset went in chase but found the front runner too speedy for comfort. Emperor of France raced upfront but failed to quicken in the final furlong and had to settle for the third slot. Remember Me and Pepe Senior who were both expected to fight for the spoils, finished dismally.

Dallas Todywalla trained Phenomenal Memory appreciated the step up in distance when he swamped the opposition in the 1800 metres J Robinson Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Phenomenal Memory had run twice and had placed on both occasions. Now going over a nine furlong trip which suited him to the full, Phenomenal Memory moved up smoothly at the top of the straight and overhauled the struggling She`s An Ace and the well backed The Way I Am. The three year old son of Glory of Dancer out of Pune Derby winner Phenomenale, Phenomenal Memory checked in well clear of The Way I Am and won by a widening margin of six lengths.

Meraki who had been prepared strongly to win on debut, duly obliged in the 1200 metres Prime Time Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Meraki had the benefit of a mock race and he led all the way and held off the late rally of Itscaro. Name of the Game was third while Santosa Cove moved up a place to finish fourth following a successful objection by Ashish against Dashrath Singh who rode Aurelio. Dashrath had little control on Aurelio who badly hampered the progress of Santosa Cove. Dashrath once again was unable to keep Bubbly Bellini on a straight course as the filly veered out despite which she proved vastly superior to the opposition while winning comfortably the lower division of the race. Seahorse, who came in for spirited betting, was outpaced in the early part and though she covered ground in the straight, the six furlong trip was not really to her liking. Jupiter was a close third.

Pesi Shroff trained Authority had let down huge expectations as a strong favourite last time. This perhaps was the reason why Authority was at good odds as Ventura received sustained support to produce a repeat winning performance. Word of Honour led all the way as is his wont but the seven year old had no answer when Authority swooped on him with a flourishing run. Authority easily overhauled the front runner and sailed away for an authoritative win. Word of Honour however managed to keep Ventura at a safe distance to claim the runner up berth.

El Camino was touted as a good thing as the progeny of Rebuttal had recorded back to back wins in impressive fashion. He was the shortest priced horse of the day but he disappointed after giving hopes in the final furlong of the 1800 metres Lei Plate. El Camino led in earnest going into the final 200 metres of the race but was floored close home by rank outsider Spades who was tailed off last till entering the straight before improving places swiftly on the wide outside to provide Hyderabad based Nilesh Rawal with one of those rare wins outside of his home centre. Papillon who lost considerable ground at the start, recovered in the straight to finish in the money.

When a stable has more than one horse of a possible chance of winning, it is invariably the one at long odds that prevails. So it proved once again in the 1200 metres S A Wahid Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Long shot Zafirah had the lead from the start but in the final furlong, when stablemate and fancied Rock The Turf came up with a flourish, it looked curtains for the front runner. However, the front runner put up a dogged resistance and prevailed by a nose in the end with the Judge calling for the photo to decide the outcome. Kickboxer was third.

Vishal Gaekwad trained La Femme Fleur asserted her superiority over Laurita yet again with a start to finish dash in the 1600 metres Charon Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Apprentice jockey Ajinkya had no problem in steering the favourite to an easy win. He had so much in hand that he could afford the luxury of looking back to see if there was any possible threat. There was none as Laurita was struggling while Papakura was without legs.
