Tragedy strikes gallant Ace Fantasy

By: Frankel   April 5 , 2015

Imtiaz Sait trained Ace Fantasy produced a brilliant gallop in the final furlong of the 2000 metres Forest fantasy Double Stakes, a race for horses rated 60 to86, the feature event of Sunday`s races. But in doing so he suffered cardiac attack even as he held on gallantly to reach the safety of the winning post ahead of Grenadine. The jockey immediately dismounted and the horse was rushed back to the saddling enclosure but sadly the horse succumbed to the fetal cardiac attack. As a mark of respect to the brave horse, the victory ceremony of the race was called off.

Strangely Ellipsis was installed the favourite when Ace Fantasy had the best credentials having scored over an identical trip in his last run beating Snowing and Ellipsis. The latter had gone on to record an impressive win flanking the form of Ace Fantasy. After a sluggish start, Al Shamsheer took over the running and led the field into the straight before Ace Fantasy eased him from that position inside the final 300 metres. Ace Fantasy then quickened and established what turned out to be a winning lead as grenadine came up with a strong challenge only to find the front runner unrelenting. Ace Fantasy held on by half a length but it was clear that he was in some sort of distress. Perhaps Ace Fantasy was destined to win the race named after his famous dam Forest Fantasy who was a multiple group race winner including the Indian Turf Invitation Cup. Ellipsis was a well beaten third.

Trainer Pesi Shroff generally targets a good horse to win the Karl Umrigar Trophy. Umrigar was a top notch jockey who achieved much fame at a young before suffering a fatal injury in a race. Umrigar is the brother-in-law of Pesi and in the past he had won the race though the format of the race itself has undergone change every year. This year, the race was over seven furlongs for maiden three year olds. Pesi had a runner in Continental which did not attract any significant support in the betting ring. Velvet Amari was backed to the exclusion of the rest. The favourite shaped like a winner in the final furlong as she was travelling well with the horses considered as threats not showing any alacrity. Unfortunately for the supporters of Velvet Amari, the filly began to drift alarmingly and found Continental who had already drifted out alongside. The drift caused interference to Continental. The objection by Ashish against Trevor who rode the winner was upheld. Strangely quite a few horses over the weakened showed this tendency, with the jockeys concerned unable to control the wayward habit of the horses.

Pesi Shroff trained Gabriella was backed strongly to win the 1000 metres Bahrain Trophy, a race for three year olds. The filly had won last time out despite drifting out alarmingly. There was belief that corrective measures had been taken but much to the disappointment of her supporters, Gabriella fought with her jockey and finally ended up on the outer rail and lost all possible winning chances. The experienced Polished Chrome had the race in control right from the start and won untroubled from Calissa. Gabriella ran on to finish third.

Speed King had impressive credentials to win the 1400 metres Rajcoomar Gujadhur Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 but the fact that the gelding was running after a longish break and had been mostly subjected to treadmill exercises perhaps deterred him from being a strong favourite. In what was an open betting affair, Helping Hand and An Jolie had their share of supporters. In the event, Speed King who showed up prominently in the straight had no problem in asserting himself. Speed King swept away from the rest in the final furlong to win as he pleased. An Jolie held off Helping Hand for the runner up berth.
Unicorn was the betting rage in the 1600 metres Adler Double Stakes, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey Zervan delayed his challenge so much so that the favourite looked a lost cause before the obvious superiority of the horse helped in beating Replica and Toofan close home. Bethpage, whose odds drifted dramatically, ran true to expectations, losing all chances at the gate itself.

Malesh Narredu trained Soothsayer had a good outing last time out and he benefitted from the same as he came home with a good burst of speed to get past the heavily backed El Wonder whose front running efforts came to naught in the final furlong. As Good As Gold finished on well to take the second place while El Wonder was relegated to the third slot.

S S Shah trained Hotspepper recorded the second win of his career from 25 outings when coming home with a powerful run down the final furlong to measure the front running Savage Garden to claim the 1600 metres Osman Chotani Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. The Other Song was beaten to third place.
