I’M Different wins on day of rude shocks

  May 22 , 2015

The race goers who were praying for weather to clear off so that the long waited summer season could take off smoothly, were at the end of Friday`s action left cursing their luck as they were subjected to rude shocks that left them poorer. Barring the last race of the day, the majority of the races were won by horses that could not be identified as possible winners. Compounding the problems further was the fact that there was no single race for three year olds, with races being confined to four year olds and over. The underfoot conditions were far from ideal for the horses to gallop and the official penetrometer reading was definitely misleading.

Coming back to the feature event, the Gr 3 Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Cup had two formidable contenders judging by their recent accomplishments. Your Royal Majesty and Arrogant Approach stood out. Accordingly these two cornered the betting. However I`M Different pulled off a surprise beating back the challenge of the fancied duo. I`M Different no doubt had finished behind Your Royal Majesty at Mumbai but the fact that the five year old hadn`t won for 362 days made many discount his chances. There was frenetic pace in front with Solomon and Field Marshal cutting a fast pace in front with Acclaimed in third position followed by Your Royal Majesty, I`M Different while Arrogant Approach headed the rear group.

Acclaimed held the initiative well into the final furlong before being displaced from that position by I`M Different who perhaps reveled in the conditions with Your Royal Majesty struggling to pick up speed. Arrogant Approach flattered to deceive as he failed to sustain the momentum after showing up prominently in the final furlong. I`M Different held on comfortably to win from Your Royal Majesty and Arrogant Approach while Acclaimed weakened to finish fourth.

Prasanna Kumar who saddled I`M Different, led in another winner through Royal salute who just about managed to prevail in a three horse finish in the 1200 metres Krishnaraja Wadiyar Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Royal Salute, who was a last start winner, led from the start and was pressed throughout the straight by Shivalik Star who failed to produce that bit extra at all the important end. Sun Divine too came with a spirited bid close home but jockey Gnaneshwar compounded his problems by dropping the whip. In the contest of the fact that a head and short head separated the first three runners, the Stewards have opened into the riding of jockey Gnaneshwar and his losing the whip defintely had a bearing on the result.

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Schiavone pulled it off in the 1400 metres Dr T Thimmaiah Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Favourite Alexander Mills looked a little gross in the paddock which was cause for concern as one was not sure whether the classic winner would produce a winning performance under such circumstances. Schiavone who came into the straight in about the fourth position, picked up speed significantly in the straight and had no trouble in storming clear of front running New Emperor. Alexander Mills came up with a late bid but could only succeed in getting the second spot ahead of long time leader New Emperor.

Kishan Thomas trained Go Lucky Go who hadn`t won for 572 days dropped a bombshell in the 1200 metres M N Prakash Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Favourite Countrys Pride shaped to win but was floored by the finishing burst of Go Lucky Go. Wings of Fortune was third while Topspot reportedly bled and was not seen at the busy end. The lower division of the race saw one sided support coming for Super Queen who had no problem in keeping her challengers at a safe distance. Rustic Sunrise was second while Havelock Prince, who was poorly positioned, came home with a flourishing run to finish an eye-catching third. With a more enterprising ride, he could have run much closer than the eventually verdict.

Irfan Ghatala trained Androstos was considered a certainty as he was taking on a modest lot of horses though he had remained a maiden despite some eye-catching efforts. He was the shortest priced horse of the day but was found wanting when long shot Fresh Start seized the initiative in the final furlong and refused to budge from there in the Littleover Stakes (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. . Though Androstos gained ground in the end, he was bound to fall short. Summer Dawn was third with hardly any perceptible effort in the saddle. The lower division of the race too saw a long shot As Good As It Gets produce a winning effort inside the final 200 metres and held off the threat of Ontime. Ocean Park who raced prominently weakened to finish third.

Gregory Sandhu trained Corbonado who showed out in the paddock parade had no problem in thrashing the opposition with a start to finish mission in the Malenahalli Stakes (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. The well fancied runner led from the start and kept on distancing himself from the rest in the straight. Breaking Thru rallied to finish second while favourite Meherani was not spotted at any stage of the race. The lower division of the race saw Rajesh Narredu trained Shining Bay swamp the opposition with five lengths win over the fancied Quarter Cask. Joey came from a long way back to finish an eye-catching third.
