Black Dragon wins an eventful feature event

By: Stay Thirsty   May 27 , 2015

Sharavanan trained Black Dragon swept past the front running Daring Down in the final furlong and recorded a facile win in the 1200 metres Obligado Trophy, a race for hoses rated 20 to 45, the only cup event of the day in the races held on Wednesday. Favourite Ace Princess jumped out riderless and was declared a non-starter by the Stewards after an enquiry into the start and bets made on the horse were refunded.

Ace Princess who was fractious appeared to have settled when the start was given. However, apprentice jockey Shiva Kumar appeared not ready for the start and the horse took a fly jump, with the jockey exercising the safe option of holding on to the side rails and stay put on the stand. Dare To Don who had moved up well from the wide outside draw, shot ahead at top of the straight but had no answer when Black Dragon came home with a powerful surge. Napolean Dynamite ran on to finish third nosing out Always United. The Stewards decided to declare Ace Princess a non-starter since she was a favourite. The decision was correct though the reasoning was not.

Bottom weighted Tulip was a comfortable winner of the 1400 metres Kolar Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Evalina was backed to the exclusion of the rest but the four year old filly looked far from ready as she looked beat well before the race came on the boil. Tulip drifted out under pressure when asked to quicken but jockey Ashad Asbar managed to gather her and drive her out. Tulip gathered steam in the final furlong and overhauled the long time front running Distance Promise and won with a measure of comfort. Class Above ran on well towards the close to finish third.

Well backed Country`s Beauty went on a successful start to finish mission in the 1200 metres Nagamangala Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above. Though under pressure Country`s Beauty veered out, the four year old was good enough for the opposition, with Capri being the best of the beaten brigade. No Doubt and Castle King finished in close order.

Favourite Lincon Continental found his bearings in the final furlong and simply trounced the opposition in the 1200 metres Balamuri Plate, a race for lowest rated horses. Ophira led deep into the straight but had no answer when Lincon Continental unleashed a powerful run from behind. Heavenly Divas came up with a good stretch run to snatch the runner up berth from Ophira.

Favourite Robinhood Pandey got stronger in the closing strides of the race and managed to get the Pepper King and landed the spoils in the 1600 metres Prince Regent Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Dance of A General who led from the start, weakened in the final 100 metres but managed to deadhead for the third place with Concentration.

In a four horse finish, Indian Hero managed to get the nod in the 1400 metres H Krishna Naik Memorial Plate, a race for lowest rated horses. Nuala led from the start but in the straight lost his chances as jockey Jagadeesh failed to keep the six year old on a straight course and went right across the field. Though Indian Hero raced wide in the straight, he had enough ammunition to edge past the rest with Tandav finishing a close second ahead of Brigadier and Nuala.

Dinesh Pujar trained Cosmic Touch toyed with the opposition in the 1200 metres Mysore Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Jockey Ashad Asbar sat still on the favourite who let Kaguya Himei lead on sufferance before asking Cosmic Touch to quicken in the final furlong. Cosmic Touch cruised away from the opposition and won unextended by a widening margin of over four lengths. Mr Go was faraway third.
