Nesto triumphs in Marilingaiah Cup

  July 5 , 2015

Puttanna trained Nesto easily accounted for the opposition in the 1200 metres Marilingaiah Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, one of the one cup events of Sunday`s Bangalore races. Volcano who was bidding for a hat-trick led the field from the start and had the initiative till the final 300 metres. Nesto who produced a good turn of foot, shot ahead of Volcano in the final furlong and won comfortably from Amazing Redd who made a late rally to edge out Volcano from the runner up berth. Shrewd Master who was loitering at the wrong end of the field finished on well to be a suggestive fourth. Favourite Scarlet Emperor raced flat and did not give hopes at any stage of the race.

Irfan Ghatala trained Jackie Oh who had a warm up race in her previous outing was backed confidently in the 1400 metres V G Saravanam Memorial Cup (Div I), a race for hoses rated 40 to 65, though the presence of Suraj Narredu who rode the horse last time opting to ride Sunstone deflected the attention of race goers. The odds firmed up on Jackie Oh close to race time which indicated as to which would be in more serious business. Jackie Oh who raced in about fifth or sixth position till turning for home, showed sparkling acceleration in the straight and by the final furlong, had the race sewn up. The five year old mare eventually won by a widening margin of five lengths over Yellow Zone and Shinnecock Hills in the hands of veteran Srinath. The lower division of the race was also won by another Ghatala trainee Absolute Red. The sparingly raced Absolute Red was the medium of a gamble as the five year old attracted smart money despite the presence of Quereshi in the saddle. Those who went by the fact that a horse ridden by Quereshi who rides a winner rarely in a season was attracting money in the ring were rewarded as Absolute Red managed to finish strongly and edge out Spanish Moon who had shaped like a winner. Audrick was the fastest finishing when taking the third slot. Deep Blue Sea who was the firm favourite, was never in the hunt.

Malesh Narredu trained Janeiro had the benefit of an educative run last time out but the presence of Hurrah and Cherie Amour ensured goods for the Mumbai challenger in the 1200 metres Divine Light Plate, a race for maiden three year olds. Hurrah had been withdrawn from the gates on veterinary grounds last week in the juvenile sprinters million though the trainer felt that that the horse was sound and had no problems. As if to prove the vets wrong, the horse was worked the next day which was the reason why the got abroad attracted good betting. Debutant Cherie Amour was also touted as a winner by those in the know. In the event, Janeiro who sported blinkers, put in a speedy display led from the start and skipped away from the rest in the run in for home and won by a comfortable margin of three lengths. Long shot Pearl Harbour beat Livin` On A Prayer to the second slot in the final moments of the race.

Sriram Komandur`s Adriphos recorded his third straight win when winning the 1400 metres Epsom Plate (Div I), a race to be ridden by apprentice jockeys who were not allowed to carry whips. Adriphos got a lovely opening along the rails in the straight and seized the initiative in the final furlong to stave off the spirited bid of Hidden Hero to land the spoils. Champakali ran on well to claim the third place. The lower division of the race was won by Sharat Kumar`s Cool Baby who was potentially superior but had not been exploited for a long time. The betting trend indicated a strong possibility of the five year old mare being a serious contender. Cool Baby moved with raking strides in the straight to easily overhaul Motivation to oblige huge expectation. She Loves it was third while Rubi Rey ran poorly and this appeared to be in keeping with the wide drift in odds.

Hidden Deal was something that many punters could not spot as the betting was centered on Edge of Eternity and One To Note. Hidden Deal showed up with an aggressive run inside the final furlong and shot ahead to record a convincing win over the fancied stablemate Icecream and One To Note at fancy odds. Suck knocks for punters with stablemates at big odds winning is not uncommon.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Castle Key held off a determined by Flame`s Fury to win the 1200 metres Young Rajput Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, the day`s opener. Desert Gilt who had his share of supporters was faraway third.
