Suzanna shines on Vikash Jaiswal’s day

By: Goldie Boy   August 22 , 2015

Trainer Bharath Singh`s even-money favourite, Suzanna (Dashrath Singh-up), scored an easy victory over an almost equally wagered, Claymore (P. Kamlesh), in the 1,100m Calcutta Juvenile Sprint, Saturday`s main attraction in the six-event race card. There were only three runners in the line-up but the competition turned out to be of top order. The afternoon also witnessed trainer Vikash Jaiswal notching up a priced treble, two of the winners were partnered by his brother, Vinay.

Suzanna made a short work of the opposition, leading all the way and holding out his main rival, the Arti Doctor-trained grey colt, Claymore, on whom jockey Kamlesh tried all tricks up his sleeves but in vain. Zacara, the third runner in the race, remained a mere passenger in the race as the grey filly, despite of her weight advantage, proved no match for the other two.

Arti`s Bold Legacy, however, fully justified her short odds in the 1,100m Apollotina Handicap. Also ridden by Kamlesh, the New Famous-Hoofbeat daughter, led by two lengths, soon after the start of the race and drew away from the field in the stretch run to record her third straight victory, in as many career`s outings. In the same race, trainer Farley Rodrigues` Marilyn placed a good second inspite of poor assistance in the saddle.

The other two trophy events in the card – the Slade Valley Cup and the A. Q. Qidwai Cup, each one a 1,200m sprint – were, however, closely contested. The former was picked up by Vikash`s Kwan Yin who had placed a good second to Arti`s Primrose in his previous outing. The winner was held back in the mid-bunch, alongside of the Robert Gowli-trained Scartella (Shailesh Shinde), while Manvendra Singh-trained Resolution made most of the running. A furlong from home, Kwan Yin was brought into the striking position, and was Scartella but the former scuttled efforts of the later, virtually 50m from home. In the same race, Arti`s another charge, Sole Power – a 16/10 favourite, was never in the contention. The four-year-old, perhaps needed the run, though amply prepared in the morning workouts, and also had the benefit of a mock race. Ignore his run.

Vikash had opened his day`s account in the curtain raiser, the 1,600m Desert Blaze Handicap. The trainer`s Highly Explosive, a 5/1 chance in the betting, was held back behind Fervent Quest, until turning from home when the seven-year-old gave a slip to the opposition to score untroubled. Trainer Jasbir Singh`s Vaani, who placed second, walked on the scene a trifle late.

Vikash completed his day`s tally when his new acquisition Impression (Md Shabbani) piped the early leaders, Alicante and the 9/4 favourite, Lexi, with a late run in the 1,200m Steinlen Handicap.

The A. Q. Qidwai Cup also produced a thriller as two Gowli`s two stable-mates – the 6/4 favourite Adiella (Christopher Alford) and the 5/1 chance, Free Energy (Shinde) -- disputed the issue in the last furlong of the race. The verdict, a desperately close one, however, went in favour of Free Energy who had the benefit of a forward run.
