Aquamarine wins with commendable ease

By: Frankel   August 30 , 2015

Pesi Shroff trained Aquamarine who was the firm favourite to win the Gr 3 Threptin Fillies` & Mares` Stakes, a terms race for three year olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Pune races, won with minimum of exertion. After letting Schiavone lead well into the straight, Aquamarine asserted her supremacy inside the final furlong to win with commendable ease.

Aquamarine looked far from ready when she went down to The General in her last outing. The benefit of that run had sharpened Aquamarine who showed out in the paddock parade. Aquamarine was at cramped odds as the rest of the opposition was considered not good enough to threaten her supremacy. Bangalore challenger Schiavone whose best performance thus far had been only over seven furlongs was the only worthy opponent in the race. Jockey Trevor set a fast pace on Schiavone and it was evident when the front runner led deep into the straight, he was doing so only on sufferance. Once D K Ashish asked the daughter of Mastercraftsman to quicken, the response was forthcoming. With minimum of fuss, Aquamarine went past Schiavone to record an easy win. Schiavone in turn was well ahead of third placed Snowing. Aquamarine is yet to reach her optimum mark and she should be prominent in the graded races over staying trips.

Dallas Todywalla trained Victoria Harbour had recorded back to back wins at Mumbai and she looked a good type of youngster. As such, the short odds quoted on her to win the 1200 metres Kejriwal Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, was only justified. After travelling well within herself into the straight, the daughter of Phoenix Tower left the field stranded once her jockey Suraj Narredu asked her to stretch out. Victoria Harbour won as she pleased from Lucky Pineapple and Desert Rage. Victoria Harbour is sure to be campaigned more ambitiously in future in graded races. She has the potential as well as the experience of winning three races in a row.

The Mystic Memory Double Stakes, a race for horses rated 80 and above, saw some of the best performed horses assigned to carry top weights. The withdrawal of Rosie Sunshine on veterinary grounds meant that classic winner Maximus would go to the post as a favourite as the trainer had wisely declared a five kg claimer Amit who had the experience of winning a few races. Remember Me who was at the bottom of the scales was racing with the confidence of a win albeit against less exalted company. Mykonos blasted away in front as the field set out for the seven furlong trip followed by Silver Streak, Remember Me, Maximus and Spirit of Mercy. Zervan was always alert on Remember Me as he chose to be in touch with Silver Streak and not far from the front runner. Remember Me quickly bridged the gap on entering the straight for the run in for home and bounced away to establish a good lead. Though Maximus came up with a sustained burst of speed, his task was bound to prove uphill in the light of the fact that Remember Me had stolen the race and had the scales totally in his favour. Maximus felt short by half a length while Silver Streak found the weight a stopper and was a tame third. Papakura was not declared to start.

Roman Flame had recorded a runaway win last time out and despite the fact that a raw apprentice Abhijeet was declared to ride, the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor was nevertheless backed down to strong favouritism in the 1200 metres Dr P K Sardeshmukh Maharaj Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The withdrawal of Schiehaillon ensured that the odds on Roman Flame cramped completely. Abhijeet was all at sea on the horse and the only thing that he did well was to get the favourite to the rails from wide outside. Perhaps the jockey expected that the horse would do everything for him as he failed to provide the necessary thrust to his riding. Roman Flame was overhauled in the final furlong by long shot Mystic Romance who went away for an easy win. Ceasarina finished on well to claim the runner up berth. The lower division of the race saw the price drift on Sentimental with sustained support coming for Rehanullah Khan trained Hedwig who appeared to be the medium of a good gamble. Hedwig raced in earnest and took over the running inside the final 350 metres and comfortably saw off the threat of favourite Sentimental. Flynn was third.

Savage Beauty was the failed favourite of Independence Trophy as she had run into traffic problems in a crowded field on that occasion. Though she had the best credentials to win the 2400 metres Circle of Bliss Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, Atalya was the strong favourite as she had the services of raging hot jockey Trevor. Atalya led from the start but had no answer when Savage Beauty swooped on her in the homestretch. Savage Beauty went away for an easy win at nourishing odds. Kyla was third while last start winner Blavatsky showed no improvement when performing miserably.

Trevor however did not go home empty handed as he booted home two winners through Jefferson and Absolute Jewel. Jefferson was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1400 metres Capriole Plate, a race for three year olds. Jefferson toyed with the opposition when checking in well clear of late rallying Saker who came from way behind to take the runner up berth. Turf Dancer who was handily placed was outclassed.

Trevor`s second winner of the day came in the concluding race of the day through Absolute Jewel in the 1000 metres Glasnost Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Absolute Jewel tracked Desert Lily well into the straight before storming clear in the final furlong. Apprentice Raghuveer Singh on Desert Lily expended the energy on the well backed horse as he failed to manoeuvre his way from the outside draw and had to expend considerable reserve to take over the running. Desert Lily was flat footed when Absolute Jewel essayed his challenge.
