Apprentice jockeys rule the roost at Malakpet

By: Tippu Sultan   November 16 , 2015

Apprentice jockeys ruled the roost at Malakpet, creating a new record on Monday, with all the seven races of the day being won by them. Even the race where no allowance could be claimed was also won by apprentice Sai Kiran who drove out Pentagon to victory. The day`s feature event, the 1400 metres Mir Fazilath Hussain Memorial Cup, a Category II race, was won by favourite Kolors. The day saw four on money favourites coming through with the other three races also being won by well backed horses.

Kolors who had placed in the classics during the monsoon season, looked cut above the rest in the feature event. Punters were willing to back this horse even at very cramped odds. The favourite did not disappoint, taking charge from the beginning in the hands of apprentice A S Pawar and skipped away from his pursuers in the final furlong to win with ease. Kalinda and Island Bid who stayed in touch with the eventual winner till the final furlong, were outclassed in the end, with the former getting the runner up berth quite easily at the expense of Island Bird.

Satyanarayana trained Atlas Star who was bidding for a hat-trick was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200 metres Elusive Hero Plate (Div I), a Category II race. The favourite looked vulnerable all the way in the final furlong as Military Belle came home with a powerful run. However, apprentice jockey Sai Kiran held his nerves and did what he could do under the circumstances by hoping for the winning post to arrive before his horse could be overhauled. Military Belle in the end fell short by the proverbial whisker. Fruit Roll Up was third. In another thrilling finish, Symbol of Choice held off Sprint Legend by the shortest of margins in the lower division of the race. Symbol of Choice who was ridden by apprentice Gaddam and Sprint Legend who had the services of another apprentice Sameeruddin fought to gain ascendancy in the final 200 metres with the bobbing of heads finally going in favour of Symbol of Choice. Vista covered good ground towards the final stages of the races to take the third place.

Donald Netto trained Double Charter had won her last outing quite well and as such, was expected to repeat against a modest lot of opponents that she was taking on in the 1200 metres Bakranangal Plate, a Category III race. The favourite did not disappoint, having the race firmly in her grasp from the word `go`. Double Charter was so far ahead of the rest in the final furlong that others had no hope for caching up and apprentice jockey Deepak Singh could afford to relax. Sayyara showed some intent when coming up with a sustained run in the closing stages of the race. This forward run should help Sayyara in his next run which should be a winning one.

Top weighted Vijay`s Harmony was the favourite to win the 1800 metres Himayat Sagar Cup, a Category III race. There was quiet support for Fair Fax who had run unplaced in the Derby and then failed as on money favourite in her next outing. Subsequently she had placed twice. Now running with changed name Carolina Moon, the lesser fancied runner stayed in touch with front running Vijays Splendour and managed to assert her supremacy inside the final furlong. Limitation and Accelerator put immense pressure on the eventual winner but Carolina Moon that bit extra to pull through in the hands of apprentice C S Vikrant. Vijays Harmony who bolted without the jockey before the start of the race, was caught up with, brought back and loaded. Vijay`s Harmony looked a spent force in the race.

Satyanarayana trained Pentagon who was well backed to make a winning debut did not disappoint in the 1000 metres Time And Place Plate, a race for maiden two year olds. The good looking son of Verenar stormed away from the rest in the run in for home so much so that he was hailed a winner long way from home. Pentagon won by a widening margin of four lengths over late finishing Scooby Dooby Doo who nosed out Miramar for the runner up berth.

Apprentice jockey N S Rathore drove out favourite Junior to win the 1600 metres Cabaret Plate, a Category III race. Dancing Farha led from the start with Junior in close proximity. Dancing Farha maintained her lead going into the final furlong but once Junior got into full flow, there was no stopping the favourite who stormed away from the front runner to win as he pleased. Eva was a well beaten third.

Strange that your reviewer doesnt find anything wrong when Vijay`s Harmony is not withdrawn after bolting a full circle.
