Kandinsky shows amazing spark to win feature

By: Frankel   January 30 , 2016

Vishal Gaikwad trained Kandinsky showed amazing spark to win the 1600 metres Columbia University Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, which featured the long card of 11 boring events programmed for Sunday. The races were all named after the famous universities of America. The concept was good but the quality of racing programmed wasn`t. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan was in his elements, booting home four winners at nourishing odds.

The feature event saw modest performer Multiglory being made the favourite though the others in the race including Kandinsky had better credentials. Kandinsky had won his last outing well and the five-year-old gelding was by the speed stallion Dutch Art. The presence of Trevor Patel was perhaps more assuring to the punters who preferred to go with Multiglory while Kandinsky was available at good odds. The visibility for this race was poor as the foggy conditions ensured that even the TV Cameras were unable to pick up the pictures well and the commentator struggled to get the names of the horses till they crossed the first furlong. Multiglory led the field from the start and though he had a healthy lead in the homestretch, the favourite wilted under the pressure exerted by Cha Cha Cha. In the meanwhile, Kandinsky who was pulled out on the wide outside to get a clear run, covered the leeway on the front runners and was travelling so well at the finish that after overhauling Cha Cha Cha in the shadow of the post, the lesser fancied runner skipped away to win in impressive fashion. Multiglory weakened to finish third.

Bezan Chenoy trained St Andrews made a smashing debut in the 1200 metres Harvard University Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Backed to the exclusion of the rest on the basis of his blazing workouts and the benefit of two mock races, St Andrews tracked front running Negara well into the straight before Donoghue let the half-brother to dual Sprinters Cup winner Nefyn to stretch out. St Andrews sped away to win by a widening margin of six lengths over Domination. Negara just about held off Temerity for the third place. There was spirited betting on Pesi Shroff trained Anteros despite the six-furlong trip being sharp for the son of Indian Derby Heroine Moonlight Romance in the lower division of the race. Anteros took a while to pick up steam and by the time he came home with a big run, Good Thing had established a winning lead. Anteros ran out of ground in the end and was half length adrift of the winner at the post. Anteros should make amends next time out though he will be at very cramped odds. Silken Eyes who did the pace making, stayed on to finish third.

Dallas Todywalla trained Shivalik Story failed in her bid to complete a hat-trick in the 1000 metres Brown University Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Sandesh did well to get the favourite into a handy position from the wide outside draw and shaped to win with a furlong left in the race. In the meanwhile, Hirohama who had also been positioned well from the outside draw by jockey Chouhan, ranged alongside of the favourite and two fought a battle for a brief while before the former shot ahead to win the race at long odds. Undisputed finished on powerfully to save place money.

Faisal Abbas trained Korol had let down as a favourite last time out. Backed once again to the exclusion of the rest, Korol led the field from the start with second favourite Shining Melody hot on his heels. The favourite however shook off his rival at the top of the straight and went on to record a comfortable win in the 1200 metres Yale University Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Magical Dancer finished on well to be a noteworthy third.

Lesser fancied Romantic Lass from trainer Dallas Todywalla`s stables fought a resolute battle with favourite Dancing Prince all the way in the final furlong before the former asserted her supremacy in the strong hands of jockey Sandesh. Yash Narredu managed to push Dancing Prince through a narrow gap along the rails but failed to add power to his finish which resulted in Romantic Lass prevailing in a tight finish. Ice Affair showed up briefly to end in third place. One of the shortest priced horses to oblige was Shades of Glory in the lower division of the race. Trevor pushed Shades of Glory to take charge with two furlongs left in the race and the progeny of Arazan quickened well to win the race with ease from Seacrets with Winds of Change being a tame third.

Malesh Narredu trained Quatro won the 1400 metres Dartmouth College Trophy (Div I), a race for lowest rated horses at nourishing odds. Quatro burst into the lead in the final furlong and got stronger at the finish to win the race with ease from Samurai. Long-time leader Coley was beaten to the fourth place by Dancing Splendour who got the third spot by a whisker. The lower division of the race also saw long priced Resilient produce a powerful, winning gallop in the final furlong and claim the race in emphatic fashion. Terrific ran on from behind to take the second spot ahead of Golden Glory who gave hope in the straight before weakening.

Imtiaz Sait trained Noble Lady looked vulnerable for a long time in the final furlong before she found reserves of energy ensuing that she skipped away from her pursuers close home to win the day`s opener, the 1000 metres Santorini Star Trophy, a race for lowest rated horses. Polar Zone who raced prominently held off Royal Sapphire to get the third pace.
