Bold March prevails in an absorbing finish

By: Frankel   February 6 , 2016

Karthik Ganapathy trained Bold March produced a powerful burst of speed down the final furlong and measured the front running Siobhan and Emperador in the shadow of the post and then just about lasted out to win from late flashing In My Dream in the Gr 3 Kunigal Stud Breeders` Produce Stakes, a terms race for three year olds, the feature event of Saturday`s races. There was little to separate the first five runners who all finished in a cluster. The quality of the race though appeared to be below the exalted standard of this race as the timing of the winner was two seconds slower than the one timed by Persian Prince in the 60 to 86 category.

The feature event did not have any horse which stood tall. The runners appeared well matched. Germanicus who had made an impressive debut was the favourite with the rest of the runners available at lucrative odds. It was difficult to point to any runner as being better than the rest. Siobhan who had run way below par last time out was taken on a start to finish mission and the progeny of Burden of Proof put up a gallant effort, fading out only in the final moments of the race in a tight finish. Bangalore challenger Emperador who chased the front runner had all the chances but close home weakened. Bold March who was hovering around, was produced with a well-timed effort and the progeny of Arazan got past the front runners in the waning yards of the race and held off In My Time who flew home on the wide outside only to find the winning post coming a fraction earlier. Emperador finished third ahead of Siobhan. The winner clocked a modest time of one minute 25.37 seconds. A head, short head, short head separated the first four finishers with Germanicus also figuring in the cluster in fifth position.

Pesi Shroff trained Persian Prince smashed the opposition in the 1400 metres Kingfisher Ultra-Emperor of Good Times Challenge, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. The running of Persian Prince who had failed as a favourite last time out has been the subject matter of an enquiry which is yet to be completed. Jockey Trevor was astride Persian Prince on the last occasion when the horse was a lost cause from the start. This time out, Pradeep Chouhan had Persian Prince dictate the pace from the start and the progeny of Arazan spared a widening margin of five lengths to Melinda who found the front runner with an extra gear. Remembrance of You ran on to finish third. Alderley Edge who was expected to figure at the finish, whipped around at the start and was a gone case from the word `go`.

Trainer Mansoor Shah was back in action after a long suspension of one year and straightaway had a runaway winner through Ancient Glory who was backed to the exclusion of the rest to win the 1200 metres Kingfisher Ultra Max Challenge, a race for lowest category horses. The last few runs of Ancient Glory did not indicate that there would be imminent dramatic change in form. During the suspension of Mansoor Shah, his horses were given endless outings and the horses got drop in weight each time the horse was given a run. The Stipes spotted no problem with the running, the handicapper perhaps accepted the run on its face value so much so that the runaway win of Ancient Glory was a snub on the authorities who have been helpless in preventing these type of unsatisfactory practices. The students of form certainly cannot back a horse like Ancient Glory and only those in the know can have courage to back such a horse. Those who backed Ancient Glory would have raked in good money but it is a sad that such things continue to happen with the benign blessings of the powers that be who are unable to stem the rot. Racing should not be reduced to manipulations. Jezebel held off She`s An Ace and Pezzonavante to get the runner up berth.

The biggest upset of the day came through Rehanullah Khan trained Queen Credible in the 1000 metres Bagpiper Soda Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds. The fancied Sydney Harbour, Kingston Heath raced flat like the soda which has lost its fizz. Queen Credible produced an incredible run from way off the pace and measured Sydney Harbour who had gained the upper hand in the final furlong. Voulez Vous was third. Kingston Heath disappointed after staying in touch with the front runners till the final furlong. The winner was a 100 to 1 shot on the Bangalore tote.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Siddhi brought off an upset win in the 1400 metres McDowell`s No 1 Soda Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Trevor drove out Siddhi to head the field inside the final furlong and managed to withstand a strong challenge from favourite Commodore who made a big splash along the rails but fell short in the end. Stardom Calling was third. After Victorio failed in his bid for a start to finish win in the lower division of the race, Alishas Pet looked like a winner when she went into a useful lead inside the final 200 metres. However, the fancied runner was surprised by the powerful burst produced by Streetjammer who squeezed out the favourite by a whisker in the dying moments of the race to land the spoils at big odds. Frankest was third.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Magnolia looked like she was going to oblige in the 1800 metres Royal Challenge Sports Drink Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66 as she had a big lead going into the final furlong. However, Daishonin made a big rally along the rails and managed to neck out the favourite yards from the winning post. Joss was third.

S S Shah trained Born To win won the 1000 metres Kingfisher Buzz-Life Delicious Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 against the run of expectations in the hands of five kg claimer Zeeshan. Born To Win skipped away from favourite Noble Lady who found that her best was not good enough to beat the front running long shot. The lower division of the race saw Rider On The Storm being the medium of a good gamble and justifying the strong backing with a comfortable win over Deltin and Chase The Ace.

Racing in Western India is now sadly about getting inside information than about form and handicapping.
