An Jolie finally obliges after an eternal wait

By: Frankel   April 9 , 2016

Noshir Cama trained An Jolie finally obliged, recording her second win after 713 days, against the run of expectations in the 1200 metres Radio One Salver, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, the feature event of Saturday`s Mumbai races. With the season winding to an end, the quality of fare on view was run of the mill which was only to be expected as the weather too has become oppressive.

An Jolie`s first win too had come at lucrative odds as a three year old. The five-year-old mare had twice lost in tight finishes. Her tendency to lose ground at the start on some occasions, too had prevented the progeny of Excellent Art from having her share of winners. Last start winner Via Amoris had won well last timeout and was expected to repeat. Generally, it has been seen that horses belonging to stables which attracts tons of money, rarely tend to repeat for the connections always prefer to wait for an opportune time to make the gains again. In keeping with this trend, Via Amoris showed no improvement over her previous effort, was a beaten cause well before the race came on the boil and finished a tame third. An Jolie who raced up with the field as Sunny Sea set a fast pace with Zoom Zoom in striking position, showed remarkable acceleration and fought a stiff battle with the latter before storming clear in the final 100 metres to land the spoils at big odds. Zoom Zoom was second ahead of favourite Via Amoris who was flat footed.

There were two horses in the fray namely Hunting Pleasure and Royal Éclair who had showed out in their previous efforts despite lackadaisical efforts on the part of their jockeys. Another pending horse in the fray for the 1400 metres Night Crown Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, was Nigella who was waiting for her turn for 317 days. The presence of Trevor ensured that Hunting Pleasure became the firm favourite close to race time. Nigella showed intent when she shot into the lead inside the final 300 metres but could not sustain it as Hunting Pleasure collared her with ease and thereafter stretched away to establish a winning lead which held him in good stead as Royal Éclair came home with a late rally. Nigella stayed on to finish third.

Altaf Hussain trained She Is Special was lesser fancied than the rest in the 2000 metres K J K Irani Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 as the progeny of Ace had run poorly in her last outing after two good efforts. Geirangerfjord was widely believed to record an encore though her last win was over inferior opposition in none too impressive timing. In the event, She Is Special who raced with the pace, looked a winner at the top of the straight, as she steadily covered the leeway while still being held under leash. When Sandesh asked her to quicken, She Is Special left the rest stranded to record a runaway win. Komandant went in futile chase of the winner and had to settle for second place ahead of Aspen.

There were just three runners in the fray for the 1600 metres J D & Peggy Banatwalla Trophy, a race for three year olds. Pesi Shroff trained Anteros was widely expected to make amends for his last start failure as the weights were also in his favour as Highland Breeze, by virtue of being a winner, was conceding four kgs to his rival. Sandesh took Highland Breeze on a start to finish mission and fought a gallant battle with Anteros all the way in the final furlong. The progeny of Multidimensional out of multi-classic winner Moonlight Romance, finally managed to put his neck in front in the dying moments of the race. The only other runner in the fry, Himalaya was a well beaten third.

The first race of the day, the 1400 metres Cursetjee Dhunjishaw Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, too had just three runners in the fray and the outcome of the race was only of academic interest as the odds on Holy Smoke to record his fourth straight win was too cramped for comfort. Holy Smoke had control of the proceedings right from the start and was traveling well within himself when checking in well clear of Simply Sweet. The Big Bull ran without hope but earned his corn bill by merely being a participant in this race.

Vinesh trained Shivalik Rose won the 1600 metres Narayandas J Dave Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category, at fancy odds. Shivalik Rose who was slightly sluggish at the start, covered ground swiftly and travelled at a striking distance of Coley. Shivalik Rose fought out with Coley before emerging stronger in the final stages of the race in the hands of apprentice Jorawar Singh. JIbhuti was third ahead of the fancied Wizard of Odds.

Antia trained Veni Vidi Vici brought off an upset in the 1000 metres Rustomji Byramji Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Veni Vidi Vici produced stunning acceleration in the final furlong to go clear of front running Mind of Madness to record an easy win. Favourite Marcus Aurelius could not match strides with the eventual winner. The favourite succeeded in getting past long-time leader Mind of Madness for the runner up berth. Bezan Chenoy trained Alfredo managed to get the better of Mizilla Gold after looking vulnerable in the final furlong to land the spoils in the lower division of the race as a well backed favourite. Aamerican Agatta was cramped for room along the rails and ended up third. Jockey Dashrath Singh who rode Aamerican Agatta put an objection against Santosh who was astride the winner for bumping him on the inside resulting in him having to check his horse and losing a possible winning chance. The objection was overruled as the Stewards felt that the interference was not so severe as to meddle with the result.
