Trevor outstanding on final day with an incredible six!

By: Frankel   April 24 , 2016

Jockey Trevor Patel who has had an outstanding year, swept the final day`s card booting home six winners as the curtain came down on the long winding Mumbai racing season on Sunday. Trevor has literally dominated racing all over India and he stands tall among the Indian jockeys with his incredible success. There are not many jockeys in India who can match his brilliance as well as consistency.

Even as Trevor reigned as the Supreme General, another horse with the same name, failed to live up to the hype that surrounded his debut. His brilliant performance in a mock race was good enough to get him the tag of being the best of his age. The top professionals were there to hype the horse so much so that even though he was making his debut in the Season Ending Tata Housing Juvenile Million, a terms race over seven furlongs, Supreme General went to the post as half money favorite. In the end, Supreme General was not capable of living up to the hype and was beaten badly. The experienced Usha Stud Farm produce Carbonara gave a weight and a thrashing to a modest lot of horses in the fray. The performance of Supreme General and the hype that surrounded it only served to once again emphasize that we all get swept away by the hype machine. Nobody is immune to that. As journalists, we can only say: ``Create the hype, but don`t ever believe it!``

There were experienced horses in the fray though none of them had outstanding credentials. Carbonara had disappointed after a promising debut. Since Supreme General had impressed in a mock race and quite a few professionals had said that they had spotted a champion in Supreme General, the horse went to the post as half money favorite. The three-year-old was making his debut and had no proven performance to back his credentials. In racing, it is not always the performance but the hype that guides professionals and punters, such one sided support for Karthik Ganapathy trained Supreme General, though misplaced, was not out of place. The miserable performance only served to highlight the fact that that you can create hype about a questionable product for a while but not an enduring one.

Fury set a fast pace as the field settled down for the seven-furlong trip, with Supreme General who was racing keen, in second positon ahead of Domination. Carbonara was in about the sixth position while Makin and Mikayla brought up the rear. Inside the final furlong, Carbonara smoothly cruised up even as Supreme General was fading out. Carbonara asserted his supremacy swiftly and went away for an effortless win over Domination who moved up powerfully along the rails in the homestretch. Fury stayed on take the third position ahead of Mikayla.

The 1200 metres Dady Adenwalla Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds, produced an absorbing finish. Lady Coachman was backed to the exclusion of the rest. Sandesh managed to get a striking positon on the favorite from the outside draw and shot ahead inside the final furlong. Courtship went in serious chase of the front runner. Though Lady Coachman looked capable of reaching the safety of the winning post on the face of a powerful challenge from Courtship under the driving finish of Trevor, she began to slacken close home and the latter was able to pull off a thrilling win. Glorious Angel was a notable third. In contrast, the lower division of the race turned out to be an anti-climax. Nazak Chenoy trained Lucas was backed to the exclusion of the rest but the favorite did not get a good start and was inclined to run out. Jockey T S Jodha was unable to control the wayward drift of the favorite who eventually ended on the outer rail and finished dismally. Sky Mine who had the benefit of a race run controlled the proceedings and had enough ammunition to finish well clear of Rising Brave to land the spoils at good hands in the hands of Trevor.

Waheed trained Komandant had showed out when finishing second in his last outing. Now backed with conviction to oblige in the 1800 metres Racing Journalists Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, the favorite took over the running within the first furlong, had an uncontested lead and checked in well clear of Ritz and Shivalik Rose. Dashrath Singh was astride the winner.

Baryshnikov had won his last outing so impressively that an encore looked a certainty in the 1000 metres Racing Officials Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Trevor who was bidding for an unprecedented sixth win of the day, took the Shiraz Sunderji trained Baryshnikov on a start to finish mission and the progeny of China Visit had no problem in keeping his rivals at bay. American Agatta ran on to finish second ahead of Victorio. Trevor had to really work had on favorite Rosella to oblige in the lower division of the race. The quietly fancied Locarno had established a sizeable lead going into the final furlong but Trevor`s perseverance on Rosella ensured that the favorite measured the front runner in the dying moments of the race.

Simon Says who was running after a longish break, was installed the firm favorite to win the Good Bye Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 1 to 26. The favorite did not show any spark and was a lost cause well before the race came on the boil. Trevor had lesser fancied Ame well in position and the M K Jadhav trainee had the race sewn up long way from home in the final furlong. Generous Lady who led the charge, could not sustain the challenge in the face of a powerful effort by the eventual winner. The lower division of the race was won by lesser fancied Mythical Sunrise who produced a late rally to measure the front running Gold Streak close home to land the spoils at nourishing odds.

Pesi Shroff trained Sans Peur recorded an encore in the 1600 metres Allforfun Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Sans Peur stormed ahead in the final furlong and faced no opposition from the rest and recorded an easy win. Korol ran on to finish second ahead of Hedwig while Samba Warrior put up a disappointing effort.
