Acclaimed wins feature on day of favourites

  May 29 , 2016

The outcome of Sunday`s racing was in total contrast to what transpired on Saturday. While the previous day`s races saw rank outsiders dominate the show, there was total transformation in the way things turned out. For one the race card was framed had better quality horses which was the reason why form held good. Whenever the club plans the day`s programme with emphasis on only lower class races, things have invariably been disastrous for punters.

Sunday`s races once again highlighted the need to come out of the traditional programming of races which cater to mediocrity which results in inconsistency. There is urgent need for a drastic overhaul in the way things are looked at. The persons at the helm should think boldly and bring out radical changes in the way the schedule of racing is decided.

The feature event day of the had a competitive field though quite a few of the top performers were past their prime. Suleiman Attaollahi trained Acclaimed has been an accomplished performer and more than anything retained his zest which was the reason why he went to the post of the 1200 metres Racing Patrons Cup, a terms race for four year olds and over, as a favourite. The rest of the runners were available at lucrative odds. There was lot of expectation on Super Sunshine to improve on his previous good effort but the choice of jockey in the absence of injured Suraj Narredu was a self-defeating exercise. Under Kiran Naidu who is not a jockey to reckon with even at Hyderabad, Super Sunshine, for the first time in his career, lost considerable ground at the start and lost his chances there itself. The horse also raced like one who has gone sour. Another horse to suffer a similar fate in the hands of another Hyderabad jockey Mukesh was Smile Stone who took a slow jump and was a beaten cause well before the field had settled down.

Mickey Mouse set a brisk pace even as Acclaimed settled in second position ahead of Shivalik Star, Pentagram and the rest. Inside the final 300 metres, Zervan pushed Acclaimed to take over the progeny of Burden of Proof quickened well and was hailed a winner long way from home. Pentagram showed intent but was not capable of overhauling the favourite and had to settle for the second place. Shivalik Star was third. The performance of Eternal Flame who finished down the field was truly disappointing and one does not know what has gone wrong with this horse who was a rousing performer as a three-year old. Eternal Flame is the classic case of a good horse gone inexorably wrong.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Quaker Ridge justified the high expectations with a resolute win in the 1400 metres Classical Act Plate, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Quaker Ridge who was always rated highly by the stable, had some niggle or the other which prevented her from achieving the mark she was capable of. Her narrow defeat during the Invitation Cup weekend races indicated that she had bounced back. Backed spiritedly to resume her winning ways, Quaker Ridge fought out with Honour before emerging superior. Cherie Amour ran on to finish second ahead of Babushka. In the form that she is in, Quaker Ridge should repeat.

Classic hopeful from the yards of trainer Malesh Narredu, Cataleya was not hard-pressed to win the 1400 metres V Venugopal Naidu Memorial Cup (Div II), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Zervan who ended up with a treble, pushed Cataleya to take over the running within the first furlong. The progeny of Multidimensional ran straight as an arrow while checking in well clear of Amazing Redd and Lozen. Since Cataleya was not pressure, the timing for the race was nearly a second slower than the one clocked by Quaker Ridge. The upper division of the race was claimed by Darius Byramji trained Force Ensign who readily obliged the expectations in the hands of jockey Pradeep Chouhan. Force Ensign came into strong position in the final furlong and skipped clear of Seven of Hearts to record a facile win. Madame Bovary was faraway third.

Suleiman trained Captain Morgan and Shan Ben Aari cornered all the betting in the 1400 metres Moonlight Romance Trophy, a race for maiden three year olds. The expected fight failed to materialize as Captain Morgan, after a sluggish beginning, covered ground steadily and bounced clear at the top of the straight to win by a widening margin of seven lengths over the heavily supported rival. Kolkata challenger Rustler grabbed the third slot.

Dominic trained Royal Defence was backed strongly to win the 1400 metres Baraloy Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15to 35. Royal Defence has let down more than the times he has justified the weight of expectations. Jockey Imran Khan was in a tearing hurry on the favourite as he bolted to the front and had a big lead over the rest going into the final furlong. However, the front runner slackened close home and Cannes who perhaps relished the underfoot conditions, closed the gap with a spirited effort and recorded a narrow win in the hands of apprentice P P Dhebe. Originally Manish was declared to ride but Dhebe who was the substitute jockey made the difference to the outcome of the race he had the experience of riding many winners while the former would surely have struggled. Neil Darashah trained Hostess left the field stranded to win the lower division of the race with great deal of ease. Lovely Dancer was second ahead of Imperial Verse who held off Happy Hours to claim the third place.

Samar Singh had a winner after a longish break when Precious Glitter led all the way and stayed clear of the rest to win the 1200 metres Bourbon King Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Flying Bullet made a late rally to finish second.
