Group I success for Poonawalla Stallion Excellent Art

By: Our Correspondent   June 14 , 2016

The new resident stallion of Poonawalla Stud Farm Excellent Art got a great boost when Under the Louvre won the Gr 1 Australia $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap, one of Australia`s premier Group I races. The first crop of Excellent Art in India is already in training and are scheduled to commence their racing career in the month of November when the winter season gets underway.

After previously placing in all four career Group 1 starts, the Robert Smerdon-trained galloper now has one of his own. And it isn`t a bad race to win, the $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap, Queensland`s most famous race. He did it in his usual style, get back, stalk the speed and pounce late.

Under The Louvre captured the big race for jockey Dwayne Dunn as the horse held out Black Heart Bart to win the $1.5 million Stradbroke Handicap on the refurbished Eagle Farm track on Saturday.

The pair finished strongly out wide to fight out the finish with the Robert Smerdon-trained Under The Louvre ($11) prevailing by a nose from Black Heart Bart ($5.50) with outsider The Virginian ($81) finishing third.

Under The Louvre managed to turn the tables on Black Heart Bart who had beaten the five-year-old stallion to a Group One victory in the Goodwood Handicap in Adelaide last start.

"He`s a good horse and deserves to win a Group One. The owners will be over the moon," said the trainer.

Multiple Group I winner Excellent Art was a champion European, English and Irish three-year-old and the Group I success for his progeny even as his first crop is in training in India, could not have come at a better time to lift the profile of the stallion.

Excellent Art, is a son of Pivotal. From two crops of racing age in the Northern Hemisphere, he had sired Group 3 winners Hazel Lavery and Experience, as well as stakes winners Artistic Jewel, Tropaios, Nimohe, and Sparkling Portrait. He also has sired French Quebec and Pegas, champions in the Czech Republic.

Out of the group stakes-placed Seeking the Gold mare Obsessive, Excellent Art won four of 11 starts in two seasons of racing, earning $1,238,952, and was high weighted on the English Free Handicap from seven to 9 1/2 furlongs in 2007. He won the Group 1 St. James`s Palace Stakes in 2007 as well as the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes, and he a listed stakes winner as a juvenile in 2006. He placed in four Grade or Group 1 races, finishing second in the 2007 Breeders` Cup Mile to Kip Deville.

Excellent Art has sired 17 Group 1, 2, 3 & L winners and placed horses that have won and placed in 47 Group races.

The past 41 days have seen a rapid rise in his progeny being right at the line in many top level Group races, which has strongly established him in Europe, Australia and America.
