Class Is Class clinches a thriller

By: Stay Thirsty   July 13 , 2016

C V G K Kishore trained Class Is Class just about survived by the skin of his teeth to win the 1400 metres Ashwajaya Plate, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the highest rated event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. New World`s late flourish failed to fetch the desired result by the proverbial whisker. With rains keeping away, the going was on the firmer side which also contributed to fast timings.

Daylite who had won his last outing was widely expected to come up with a repeat performance. Murcilago was next in demand with support for Class Is Class and New World being rather subdued. Daylite set out on a start to finish mission even as Class Is Class lost a couple of lengths at the start as is his wont. New World failed to find early speed and was in the rear group. Daylite led the field well into the straight with Murcilago in a handy position and Fink making significant progress to be in contention. However, these horses failed to build on their advantage and went out of contention once the horses from the rear group began to gain ascendancy. Class Is Class came through the middle with a strong run and seized the initiative in the final furlong. New World who went very wide at the final bend which perhaps put paid to his chances also finished on powerfully but Class Is Class just about lasted out to win by the narrowest of margins. Sofast ran better than fancied stablemate Daylite to take the third positon.

Monnappa trained Saigar who had come with a good forward run last time out also enjoyed pull in weights vis-à-vis the top weight carried by runaway winner of her last outing Country`s Princess. The Feroz Khan`s ward was backed down on money favouritism to win the Gundlupet Plate (Div I), a race for three-year-olds with Saigar being available at nourishing odds. Country`s Princess went on a start to finish mission with Saigar in chase. Inside the final furlong, Saigar got stronger and stretched to win by a comfortable margin of over three lengths in a course record timing of one minute 04.26 seconds which fractionally improved the one set by Taqdeer Ka Badshah last year. Sardinia was faraway third. Michael Eshwer trainer Michaela made a winning debut in the lower division of the race. The daughter of Roderic O`Connor tracked Chrome into the straight before leaving the front runner stranded in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of seven lengths. Country`s Angel was third.

Tejaswi trained Scaramouche brought off an upset in the 1200 metres Davanagere Plate, a race for horsesrated20 to 45. Mumbai import Chase The Ace was widely supported to win, with the rest available at long odds. Chase The Ace led from the start, well into the straight but it was clear that the five-year old enjoyed the lead only on sufferance. When the race came on the boil, Chase The Ace went down with a timid effort. Scaramouche shot through along the rails inside the final furlong to stave off the late flourish of Golden Cruise who warmed up to the task rather late despite being handily positioned. Arrive who chased Chase The Sun in the straight, stayed on to take the third slot.

Lesser fancied Sea Lagoon was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey S John and the front runner had no problem in winning the 1400 metres Varahi Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Though favourite Script Writer put immense pressure on the front runner in the straight, Sea Lagoon skipped away in the last furlong to record a comfortable win. Color Me stayed put in third position despite coming close to overhauling the favourite for the runner up berth.

In what was an open betting affair where the odds on all the horses were lucrative, last start winner Eudora won quite capably the 1600 metres Nethravathi Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Eudora who raced in the penultimate position, steadily improved places approaching the final bend and elected to take the ground saving run along the rails. Though the four-year-old filly was in danger of running into trouble as she had to take a tight opening, the filly did well to go through and then essayed her challenge to front-running La Piperi. Eudora got stronger close home and won with a measure of comfort. Rosie`s Dream was third.

After being switched to the inside in the run in for home, favourite Zizi steadily gained ascendancy over Ayahuasca in the closing stages of the race to record a comfortable win in the 1200 metres Bannerghataa Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Saratoga Spring was third. Aretes was a non-starter.
