Knighthood finds the target

By: Goldie Boy   August 24 , 2016

Trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s 9/10 favourite, Knighthood (Arshad Alam-up) scored an easy victory in the 1,200m Alibi Handicap, Wednesday`s main attraction. The afternoon`s six-event card also witnessed trainer Harvinder Bath`s heavily wagered western India challenger, Shining Melody, delivering the goods in the hands of jockey Christopher Alford.

Knighthood was considered as the only certainty in the afternoon`s card; which, otherwise, looked like punters` graveyard. However, the way thing turned out, the mid-week race-crowd had no reason to complain as four fancied runners found the going easy.

Knighthood`s task was made easier by Meet The Legend (Ashhad Aasbar) who, despite a level start, struggled to gallop with the field and dropped out of contention within a furlong or so from the start. The horse had attracted an inspired wagering, going to the start as a clear 3/1 chance.

The impressive performers in the race were Vijay Singh`s Romantic Flow (apprentice Munna Alam) and Bharath Singh`s top-weighted runner, Mystic Romance (Shailesh Shinde). Romantic Flow made most of the running and also troubled the favourite, who was in chase till 150m from home.

Mystic Romance, on the other hand, was a trifle late on the scene, as he was made to gallop four to six-wide, almost throughout the journey, in a field which was virtually reduced to five runners.

Adalicia (S. John) and Lochinvar (Dashrath Singh) both won their respective events, over a mile circuits – the Sir Aali Handicap and the Avaglow Plate, for maidens, in heart warming manner. In fact, both are destined for more wins in the weeks to follow.

Lochinvar, from Bharath`s stable, and James Mckeown`s I Told You Know (Arshad), received an equal support at 5/2 in the betting but the later proved no match for Lochnivar who made all the running to retire as a convincing winner.

Vijay`s Adalacia, too, found the going easy. The four-year-old went to the start as a joint-favourite, at 3/1, with Mckeown`s Yokumoku (Ashhad) who, finally, placed a poor third. It was the top-weighted Citi Heights who dictated the terms over Adalicia and Arti Doctor`s Bubbly Bellini (S. Zervaan) till about a furlong from home. However, the race was practically over when Adalicia changed gear to score, over the long time leader, by three long lengths.

The expanding odds, in the betting, of Bath`s Abigail, and the steady following of her stable-mate, Shining Melody, at 14/10, cleared the clouds of uncertainty in the 1,100m Dominate Handicap, that the favourite means business. The winner, a Chevalier daughter, was taken to a start-to-finish mission, by Alford, and she found the target. Abigail, on the other hand, struck to the fourth berth throughout but closed in towards the end to place a good fourth.

The two outsiders who ruled the curtain raiser and the concluding event were Dipak Karki`s Leonardo (Nelson Maseyk) and Mckeown`s Zacara (Mudasser Nazar). Leanrdo was brought with a late run to down the long time leader, Ace Amandus (Vinay Jaiswal), in the 1,100m La Gitana Handicap, while Zacara made her own running, in the 1,200m True Colours Handicap, to last out to score in an exciting finish, over the fancied runner, Jorell (Alam) , from Vikash Jaiswal`s stable.
