Sans Peur breaks the jinx in third attempt

By: Stay Thirsty   August 25 , 2016

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Sans Peur who had found one better on the last two occasions, made amends with a hard-fought win over Sir Majestic in the 1200metres H H Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of opening day`s races of the Mysore Regular Season on Thursday. Trevor Patel rode a fine tactical race and was courageous enough to take a narrow gap between Referent and Shivalik Story inside the final furlong and fought off a strong challenge essayed by Sir Majestic to establish his supremacy over the latter yet again.

Sans Peur was widely supported to oblige this time out as the filly had beaten Sir Majestic in her last effort and thus enjoyed an edge over the latter on this score. To make things worse for Sir Majestic, the fancied runner took a hesitant, slow start. In a fast run race where the front-runners went like scalded cats, Referent led the field into the straight. Sans Peur was settled in about the sixth position while Sir Majestic made ground in the first furlong to race in close proximity to the favourite. Trevor chose to get the inner path and confidently took the gap between Referent and Shivalik Story who were battling it out despite the fact that a similar attempt at Bangalore on Sheryl had kept him out of action for three months due to a fall because the gap closed on that occasion. Sans Peur had the speed to take the gap and was driven out to win from Sir Majestic who shaped to collar the favourite but fell short in the end. Secret Touch who graced the rear end of the field, made headway along the rails and was angled out in the final furlong and finished a suggestive third, returning high dividend on place investment.

The day`s proceedings saw fancied runners oblige in almost all the events. A couple of horses won after very long breaks. Wind Wonder who had last won in a race meant for horses rated 80 and above, 707 days ago on the same track, was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1200metres B K Krishnadevaraj Urs Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Since he had come down a lot in scales, it was clear that the moment he attracted spirited betting in the ring, he will be spot on. Jockey Suraj Narredu had no problem in steering the seven-year-old to a comfortable win over Veni Vidi Vici and Cool Baby. The lower division of the race saw Gregory Sandhu trained Little Man guided to a start to finish win by apprentice jockey Prashant Debe who began his Mysore campaign with a double to his credit. Little Man had established a winning lead in the final furlong and by the time the small made Akha Teej warmed up to the task, it was too late. The latter fell short by a neck. Red Red Rose managed to get the third place.

Ganapathy trained Fabulous Touch looked too good in the 1400 metres Pune Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The three-year-old filly had run a length behind Commonwealth in one of her outings at Bangalore and then gone on to win by a big margin at Ooty. What was of concern was her subsequent poor efforts during the summer season. However, she was taking on a modest lot of horses but the hesitation on the part of punters saw her odds go up to a little more than even money. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan had no problem in steering the daughter of Arazan to a facile win over Super Strong and Artorius. Sandhu trained Masada was backed strongly to win the lower division of the race but found Perfect King too strong for comfort. Perfect King sailed clear of his opponent in the homestretch to record an easy win. Hackett was third, yet again giving good dividends for those who backed jockey Raja Rao to do something worthwhile in the race.

Prithviraj trained First Step had run a good second behind Internal Affair in his last effort and the five-year-old, running over an extended trip of a mile in the 1600 metres Somanathpur Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, was quietly fancied. Czar Rule was widely backed as a favourite to oblige. Dhebe had no hesitation in taking First Step to the front and the five-year-old gelding stayed put there, staving off the challenge of late-finishing Attractive Bay and Czar Rule.

Srinivas trained Brown Beauty had better credentials than the rest to win the 1200 metres Lavasa Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds based in Mysore. After One Step Ahead brought the field into view, Brown Beauty smoothly cruised into the lead and went away for a win by a widening margin of four lengths. Silver Wood was faraway third.

Surender trained Saratoga Spring who hadn`t won for 902 days, obliged as a fancied runner in the 1200 metres Virija Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, with a start to finish effort. Once rated as a horse of immense potential, Saratoga Spring failed to live up to that expectation. Aretes was asked for an effort by jockey Uday Kiran in the final furlong and the five-year-old began to respond close home but the jockey chose to drop his hands well before the winning post. He riding is sure to get him a reprimand. Everlasting Memory held off Stride to Success for the third place.
