Aster Rose too good in Deccan Fillies Championship

By: Tippu Sultan   August 29 , 2016

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Aster Rose lived up to expectations by easily claiming the Gr 3 Deccan Fillies Championship Stakes, the first classic of the season, at Malakpet on Monday. The daughter of Multidimensional asserted her supremacy in the final furlong to win pulling up from local challenger Prospero while Aika Aika Aika who had built a formidable reputation by her performance during the summer season at Bangalore put in a meek performance.

Aster Rose was quoted at just about even money while the odds on Aika Aika Aika were at 6/1. This in itself indicated that something could be amiss with the latter as she had finished ahead of Aster Rose in the Bangalore Fillies Championship Stakes. Local challenger Prospero who had recoded three wins in a row, was the second favourite while there was not much enthusiasm on two participants from Pune namely Cheerleader and Courtship.

Sandesh took Prospero on a start to finish mission followed by Cheerleader who initially veered out before being pulled back towards the rails, Anantara, Courtship and Aika Aika Aika. The last named was little slow from the gates and this has become a noticeable trend with horses ridden by jockey Pradeep Chouhan in the recent past. Be Safe, Myrtlewood who had no history of being a slow starter, Striking View and Lord Grantham are recent examples of horses ridden by him showing this trait.

Prospero brought the field into the homestretch with Aster Rose close on her heels. Aika Aika Aika showed some improvement when giving hopes in the straight. Courtship veered out to the outer rail while Anantara who was shifting out under pressure, ducked towards the rails and hung badly. Jockey John drove out Aster Rose to overhaul Prospero in the final furlong and the Usha Stud Farm bred favourite had the race sewn up long way from home. Aika Aika Aika was unable to measure long-time leader Prospero and had to settle for the third slot.

Former Karnataka cricket captain A V Jayaprakash owned Awesome Approach recorded an encore in fine style in the 1200 metres Con Amore Cup, a Category III race. Backed to the exclusion of the rest on the basis of the runaway success achieved by Awesome Approach last time out, the favourite did not disappoint. Paprika attempted start to finish tactics but in the final furlong failed to produce anything extra when Awesome Approach pounced on her with an aggressive effort. The favourite bounced clear for a comfortable win. Indian Dreams ran on well from behind to edge out the long-timer leader Paprika to get the runner up berth.

Pradeep Chouhan nearly made a mess of the job on favourite Like Wise in the 1600 metres Blue Max Cup, a Category III race as he ran into a pocket along the rails and had to angle out the horse with a furlong left in the race. The progeny of Dancing Forever showed so much class that despite being thrown off the stride, she came home with a powerful run to win pulling up in the end. Elysian who had stayed stubbornly in front buckled close home. Monte Rosa was third.

Satyanarayana trained City of Harmony was well backed to win the 1200metres R Krishnaswami Memorial Cup, a Category II race. City of Harmony hit the front from the word `go` and had no problem in staying well clear of the rest to win as he pleased. Dancing Leaf failed to show the spark of the first season and had to settle for the second position ahead of Charlie Brown while Dream Vision made no show in this category after an impressive win in the lower category.

Prasad Raju trained Rio Rojo duly completed a hat-trick of wins, claiming the 2400 metres Delage Plate, a Category II race. Suraj Narredu settled the favourite in a handy second positon as Humraaj did the job of a pace-maker. Suraj waited with Rio Rojo till approaching the final furlong and thereafter asked the favourite to take charge. Rio Rojo easily went ahead and kept on expanding the lead to over 10 lengths at the finish. Blue Eyed Boy comfortably got the measure of long-time leader Humraaj to get the second place.

Shezad Abbas trained Princess Rose obliged as a well backed favourite in the 1400 metres Starsky Plate, a Category III race. Princess Rose came into strong contention in the final furlong and stormed clear to win with a convincing margin over late-finishing Apache Gal. The latter failed to get a clear run on the inside and had to be brought the widest of the lot to come into contention. However, her task was a herculean one as the eventual winner who was handily placed, skipped clear at the opportune time. Lavender nosed out Zoheb Sheikh trained Super Racer came in for big betting in the 1200 metres Diablo Plate, a Category II as the odds eased on Vijays Vision who looked far from ready. There was quiet touch in the offing in the form of Srinagesh trained queen To Rule who was backed down from a higher quote. In the event, Queen To Rule proved overwhelmingly superior, settling the race beyond doubt in the final furlong to win by a widening margin of three lengths over Harvest Moon who nosed out the favourite from saving the second spot.

Your observation on P S Chouhan `s riding is aptly correct.
