Trainer Netto corners glory with four winners

By: Tippu Sultan   September 20 , 2016

Trainer Donald Netto trained Picture Perfect brought off a big upset in the1200 metres Hyderabad Veterinary College Diamond Jubilee Cup, a Category III race, the highlight of Tuesday`s Hyderabad races. In keeping with the fact that Hyderabad conducted racing on Tuesday which is not the norm, the trend favoured lesser horses to dominate the proceedings. Netto struck it rich, saddling four winners.

After chasing Bouncer well into the straight, Picture Perfect bounced clear and faced no real threat to her supremacy as she marched towards the winning post in style. Favourite Vijays Delight brought some excitement to the proceedings with a late rally which could assure her of only the second spot ahead of Golden Angel. With Picture Perfect having an unproductive 407 days, it was only to be expected she would be long odds despite the presence of Dashrath Singh in the saddle.

Netto trained Oh Dear made it four for four when the daughter of Mathematician led comfortably in front and had a decisive lead going into the final furlong of the 1100 metres Karimnagar Plate, a Category II race. Favourite Advocate General was not spotted at the busy end. Mangalyaan as is his wont, finished on powerfully to edge past Symbol of Pride and Mighty Swing to get the second place in a cluster finish.

Faisal Hassan trained Italian Cypress hadn`t won for some time. However, the five-year-old gelding had run a good forward race last time out which was indicative of the fact that he would be a force to reckon with on current form. He was well supported to win the Raja Mehaboob Karan Memorial Cup (Div I), a Category II race. Italian Cypress came up with the patented burst of speed in the final furlong to easily sail past the front-runners with ease and record an impressive win over Red Express who held off favourite Gayle Force by a whisker to get the runner-up berth. Pradeep Chouhan drove out Crown Royal to keep the challenge of late-rallying Khoshgel at bay to win the lower division of the race. Aston Doulton too showed some spark towards the finish.

Anupam Sharma trained Seven Colours smoothly cruised into the lead on turning for home and opened up a useful lead which held him in good stead in the 1200 metres Malvado Plate (Div I), a Category II race. Mountain of Light and Own Battle came home with big efforts but found the front-runner slip past them before they could overwhelm the eventual winner. Favourite Princess of Dream jumped out from the gates without its rider. The lower division of the race produced an exciting three-way finish. Patron Saint and Cash Landing were both spiritedly backed, with favouritism alternating between them. Patron Saint showed up prominently inside the final furlong with Cash Landing also putting up a strong challenge. Even as both these horses were engaged in a stiff battle for supremacy with Cash Landing being the likely candidate to win, Netto trained Batur flew home on the wide outside and got the nod in the final stride of the race. Even the fourth placed Chinese Thought was not far behind.

There were a couple of races framed in Category III for horses rated 25 and below which meant that an element of unpredictability was only to be expected. Leo D`Silva trained Cool Springs emerged the victor against the aptly named fancied runner Hard Fought by a neck. Coral Springs who hadn`t won for 1121 days, went into the lead with a furlong left in the race and managed to keep the challenge of Hard Fought to record a narrow win. Full of Life was third. Prasad Raju trained Hunter`s Pride brought off a big upset in the lower division of the race, winning at the expense of Ashwini. This was the first career win for Hunter`s Pride in 28 starts. Favourite Nelly was third.

Netto trained Silvassa steadily moved up to be in a striking position at the top of the straight and took control of the proceedings in the straight to sail clear of the opposition to win the 2200 metres Nizam Sagar Cup, a Category III race. Royal Hero showed some intent as he went in chase of the eventual winner but found that the front-runner had not only gone beyond reach but was also not showing any signs of weakening. Upon A Star was third.
