Akash Rajput scores a treble on Vijay Singh’s day

By: Goldie Boy   September 21 , 2016

Trainer Vijay Singh`s colt, Multitude (S. John-up) claimed the 1,800m Alternator Cup, the feature event in Wednesday`s race card. John also helped the trainer complete the treble when Fabienne delivered the goods in the concluding event. Vijay`s Apercus had also scored an easy victory in the hands of jockey Christopher Alford, in-between the trainer`s two wins. The afternoon otherwise belonged to apprentice Akash Rajput who scored a priced treble in the seven-event card.

Multitude`s victory was on the cards but the half-money favourite had to pressed, inside the last furlong, to beat the long time leader, Falcon (apprentice Munna Alam).

John, on the other hand, had relatively cushy ride, on Vijay`s Fabienne. The champion jockey had the 16/10 favourite settled in fourth while Bacaardi made the running till the final turn. Improving gradually, thereafter, the going was easy for the Dancing Forever filly as there was no meaningful threat from the top-weighted filly, Bubbly Bellini (S. Zervan), from trainer Arti Doctor`s stable.

Vijay Apercus was a quiet fancy at 9/2 but was equally at ease on his way to winning the 1,400m Flamenco Star Handicap. Also ridden in a check, the Chevalier colt found the opposition as an easy meat with the fancied pair in the 11-horse field -- John`s Flourishing Move Abigail -- never giving the impression of being serious competitors. Flourishing Moved was seen toiling in the mid-division; until the early half, and never improved while trainer Hanvinder Bath`s favourite, Abigail, lost all her chances at the gates, with a tardy jump out.

Bath`s 3/1 favourite, Mister Majestic was, on the other hand, was a victim of an over-confident riding of Alford. Things went wrong from the very start for the Vernar son who took a fly jump out but, fortunately, recovered immediately to settle up-front. In fact, the favourite was cruising in the final 250m with a three-length lead and Alford hardly moving his muscles. The inevitable happened in the final 100m, prompting Alford to alert his charge who, however, failed to contain trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s on rushing Knighthood (Rajput), a 9/2 chance in the betting. The RCTC`s stipes and stewards passed off the matter as if they didn`t see anything.

Well, you may call it poetic justice as Knighthood had provided the apprentice his last of the three wins, having started the day with the victory on Bath`s 10/1 chance Roman Ridge in the 1,100m Mariinsky Plate, early in the afternoon. The Holy Roman Emperor son was always in chase of the even-money favourite, Mustang (John), who was having to drag his feet, inside the final 150m. In the same race, the Arti Doctor-trained filly Arabian Sky (Zervan) -- a 9/2 chance -- who was expected to have cashed in on Mustang`s shortcomings in her debut race, did manage to place ahead of the favourite but found the Bath-charge a hard a wee bit good. Arabian Sky will repay losses when ridden by John.

The expanding odds of Vikash`s Jorell did give wrong signals but Akash meant business right from the word ‘go,` in the 1,100m Rockfeller Handicap. The horse opened as 18/10 favourite but the odds doubled for obvious reasons – for the benefits of out-station connections. Compare the RCTC`s and the RWITC`s dividends.

RCTC`s Class V is very very poor. Almost the same horses keep on clashing and picking up the stakes. There is no point discussing the 1,600m Winfree Handicap which went for charity.
