Seven of Hearts scrapes home in R R R Trophy

By: Stay Thirsty   September 23 , 2016

Britto trained Seven of Hearts shot ahead of the pack inside the final furlong and then opened up a useful lead which held the six-year-old gelding in good stead as the cushion established helped the long shot to keep the challenge of Taqdeer Ka Badshah at bay to win the 1400 metres Hotel R R R Gold Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Friday`s Mysore races. Apprentice jockey Prashanth Dhebe showed his increasing confidence in the manner in which he rode the long shot to victory. Favourite Pearl Secret flopped despite having all the chances.

Pearl Secret had recorded back to back wins at Bangalore and was fancied ahead of the rest despite the fact that the stable had been firing duds. Mr Carpe led the field into the straight with Seven of Hearts and Pearl Secret who were in close proximity, essaying their challenge soon after straightening. Seven of Hearts showed greater resolution to surge ahead even as Pearl Secret failed to pick up momentum and plodded in the same place. Taqdeer Ka Badshah warmed up to the task rather late and his finishing burst could only bring him tantalisingly close to the winner. Pearl Secret stayed on to finish third.

Jockey S John has been enjoying a great run. His presence on Alexandrite was reason enough to make the four-year-old filly as a strong favourite ahead of Amazing Charm who had been flopping continuously. Amazing Charm led in earnest and almost pulled it off but the forceful finish of John on Alexandrite ensured the victory for the favourite by a whisker in the1600 metres Mayor`s Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Society Music finished on strongly to take the third place.

Krieger was another favourite to flop in the 1200 metres Udhagamandalam Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, the Aravind Ganapathy trainee shot ahead of long-time leader Dare The Don in the final furlong but failed to sustain the lead for long. He went down without a fight when Calico Jack covered up the leeway aggressively and essayed his challenge. Calico Jack easily measured the favourite and went away for an easy win. Hidden Soldier was third.

Jockey Pradeep Chouhan achieved a hat-trick of sorts in that all the three horses that he rode as favourites, failed to run to expectations. Flirting Eyes was the firm favourite to win the 1400 metres Coorg Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Flirting Eyes gave no hopes as she failed to quicken despite ideally positioned and flopped miserably. Strong Conviction who had the lead going into the final furlong, held off the late flourish of Daenerys and Love Is Life who literally flew from the back of the pack. The upper division of the race was claimed by favourite Reference who fought hard before storming clear in the final furlong to win the race with ease. Handsome Stash was on course to get the second place but the jockey dropped his hands 20 metres from the post and Havelock Princess was able to snatch the runner-up berth by a whisker.

John pushed Alecia to take over the running from a handy fourth position at the final bend and the progeny of Win Legend bounced clear to win the Mandakalli Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, pulling up. Cato`s Call and Al Dorado occupied the two next two slots.

Favourite Shivalik Dance led almost every inch of the 1400 metres P Shanker Memorial Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category except the final one as long shot Elegant Star sneaked along the rails and managed to neck out the favourite in the closing stride of the race. Golden Nimbus was in with a chance but failed to change gears when the situation demanded and had to settle for the third place. Lokanath trained Interactive had been in cold storage for a long time and now tried with serious intent in the hands of apprentice jockey Prashanth Dhebe, Interactive managed to get the better of Thundersquall in the dying moments of the race to land the spoils at nourishing odds. Noble Princess was third.

The well backed Badshah proved overwhelmingly superior in the 1200 metres Nainital Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category, winning with a great deal of ease. Getafix nosed out Coffee Time for the runner-up berth. The last named overcame a sluggish start to come into contention for a berth on the frame.
