Severus stands test of stamina to win Mahindra Trophy

By: Frankel   October 15 , 2016

B Prakash trained Severus proved that he had no short coming as far as stamina was concerned as he outstayed the others in the 3200 metres Suresh Mahindra Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the longest race in the country, the feature event of Saturday`s Pune races. Sandesh rode a fine tactical race when bringing Severus from the last position and taking control inside the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort to swell his lead in the jockeys` championship stakes with a treble for the day.

Severus was well placed in scales to score in the race meant to test the stamina of the horses to the hilt as also the ability of the jockeys to preserve the horse for the final assault. Jigsaw went on a start to finish mission, increased the tempo of the race midway through the race, but was founding when the other three runners pounced on him at the top of the straight and eventually finished a dismal last. Square Moon raced in second position ahead of Rodeo and Severus. By the time the runners took the final turn, Jigsaw`s lead had been cut significantly, with the other three moving up to take striking positions. It was evident even at this point of time that the best moving horse was Severus. After Square Moon overhauled the front-runner, Sandesh brought Severus with a strong run and the progeny of Cockney Rebel quickly bounced clear to have the race sewn up long way from home. Winner of this race in 2013, Rodeo tried hard to catch up with these runners but found them slip beyond his reach and he had to settle for the third spot behind Square Moon.

Sandesh was also astride the winner of 1200 metres F A & K A Irani Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Despite the fact that Sparkling Eyes was running over a sharper trip, she was nevertheless made the firm favourite, with Champagne available at good odds. Sandesh had Champagne in a forward position and pushed the second favourite to take over the running inside the final 300 metres. The progeny of Arazan changed gears as it were and went storming clear to win from late rallying Sparkling Eyes who was clearly crying for more ground. Vision of Romance was third.

Sandesh had earlier in the day was also successful on Frivolous who waged a hard-fought battle before prevailing over Mrs Patmore in the final strides of the race to win the 1600 metres N K Pudumjee Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Mrs Patmore took over the running from owner mate Brazos at the top of the straight with Frivolous going in hot pursuit. Sandesh appeared to have dropped his whip as he had to drive out hands and heels in what turned out to be a tight finish. In a battle of wits, Sandesh was able to get his horse to neck out Mrs Patmore who had Trevor for assistance. Pacific Dunes was third eight lengths behind the runner-up.

Altamash Ahmed trained Anvil Star had the benefit of a sharp run over a sprint and now with the benefit of that run, was strongly backed to win the 1400 metres Crowne Plaza Pune Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Anvil Star took a long while to warm up in the straight but which time last start winner Adeline had stolen a march. However, the front-runner slackened in the shadow of the post and Anvil Star breezed past the front-runner close home. Kodiac Queen was third. Sandeep Mangalorkar trained Country Music had run a forward race last time out which gave him as good a chance as any to win the lower division of the race. However, the flow of money was on Rainbow Dash. Yet again, the favourite, after giving hopes in the final furlong by having a good lead, faltered and Country Music was able to cover the leeway and neck out the front-runner close home. Royal Éclair was third while Erdemir who was expected to figure at the finish, ran way below known form.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Magnificence was bidding for a hat-trick and accordingly was backed strongly to win the 2000 metres Lufthansa Senator Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. The habitual slow starter was, this time, off to a brisk start. Jordana as is her wont, was the pace-setter. Bullrun took over the running on turning for home with Magnificence under pressure to cover some leeway on the front-runner. But Magnificence warmed up to the task like he has always done and came home with a big effort which saw him easily overhaul last year`s Pune Derby winner with something to spare.

Shape The Scape came in for sided betting like most of Mansoor Shah`s horses which are gambled upon in the 1200 metres Roedl & Partner Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest class. Apprentice jockey S A Amit had Shape The Scape in a handy third position as War Princess set a fast pace. Shape The Scape went past the front-runners inside the final two furlongs and thereafter there was only one horse in the race. Samurai ran on from behind to take the second spot ahead of late-finishing Majestic Honey who overcame a sluggish start to save place money.

There were as many as five horses from the stables of Narendra Lagad in the 1600 metres Jamshed Dalal Trophy, a race for horses in the lowest category. One of them was bound to win though it was difficult to pinpoint which one. In the event, Coley made it quite easily, overwhelming the front-running Glorious Hymn with a furlong left in the race to win at long odds. Sir Song came up with a late bid but narrowly failed to get the runner-up berth.
