Cameron beats a modest field to win Leger

By: Tippu Sultan   October 24 , 2016

Suleiman Attaollahi trained Cameron was presented with the Gr 2 Golconda St Leger on a platter as the best horses shied away from competing in this race. The progeny of Admiralofthefleet easily held off the challenge of Let The Lion Roar to win the last classic of the season on Monday at Malakpet. Fancied runners ruled the roost in most events of the day.

Cameron is a winner of Calcutta Oaks and she had the experience of going over longer trips on a regular basis. The only other classic contender in the fray was Woman O War whose forte has been shorter distance. She was also going into the race on the back of a miserable performance. Let The Lion Rao was capable of traversing the gruelling trip along with Festive Cheer but they lacked the requisite class against the highest rated runner in the fray.

Jockey Trevor Patel did not think twice when taking Cameron to the front as the rest were reluctant to do the running. Midway through the race, Carolina Moon took over the running but the filly led only on sufferance and at the final bend, Cameron was once again in front. Inside the final furlong, Let The Lion Roar came home with a striking acceleration and the favourite looked vulnerable. However, Cameron pulled out that bit extra to record a comfortable win. Festive Cheer was third.

Satheesh trained King of Pop flew in the final furlong to tackle the front-running Vijays Joy in the shadow of the post to record an impressive in the 1200 metres Dundoo Ekambar Memorial Cup, a Category I race. After Numinous led into the straight, Vijays Joy, with a back-breaking weight of 64 kgs shot into the lead and established what appeared a winning lead as the others were left to cover considerable leeway. King of Pop who was unleashed in the final furlong, produced a strong burst of speed to overhaul a tiring top-weight in the closing stages of the race. Favourite Commanding Boy could do no better than finish third while Numinous, the early pace-maker weakened to finish off the frame.

Satyanarayana trained City of Pearls came in for spirited support to win the 1200 metres Faridoon S Chenoy Memorial Cup (Div II), a Category II race. Oh Dear who was four for four, was bidding to win her fifth straight win and was the favourite ahead of City of Pearls. Oh Dear shot into the lead in earnest inside the final two furlongs but could not sustain her lead as City of Pearls pounced on her with a strong effort. With a furlong left in the race, City of Pearls asserted his supremacy to eventually win by a comfortable margin of over two lengths. Queen of the Stars took the third place.

Donald Netto trained Flower Roll Up had no problem in keeping the challenge of favourite Rebellion at bay to win the 1600 metres Blue Ice Plate, a Category II race. Flower Roll Up quickly asserted her supremacy inside the final two furlongs and drew clear and established a sizeable lead which the favourite found hard to bridge. Crown Royal was third.

Sequeira trained Penumatcha`s Pride fought all the way with favourite Nautanki to win the 2400 metres Mystical Cup, a Category III race and put his head in front at the all-important end to win the race at big odds. The rest of the runners were far away with Upon A Star finishing third.

The 1200 metres Mahbubnagar Pate (Div I), a Category III race looked an open affair especially with the jockeys not allowed to carry their whips. Vijays Honour and Royal Dynamite were the preferred horses. Apache Gal came in for good support close to race time though the thrust of betting was on Vijays Honour. Apache Gal flew on the wide outside to get the better of Platinum to bag the race. Vijays Honour was a close third and the inward drift of the winner slightly hampered the favourite. However, the objection put by Gaddam against Tanwar who rode the winner did not have enough substance for the Stewards to consider the plea.

Anupam Sharma trained Princess Hina was backed with conviction by the people in the know to win the 1200 metres Faridoon S Chenoy Memorial Cup (Div I), a Category II race. Princess Hina and Symbol of Pride broke away from the back and fought out the issue, with the former retaining the edge till crossing the winning post. Green Image ran on to finish third ahead of Red Express whose odds drift indicated that he may not be in serious contention.

Donald Netto trained King David proved too good for the opposition in the1100 metres Cape Knight Plate, a Category III race. King David emerged clear inside the final 300 metres and stretched away for a facile win over Yes Baby and Poll Promise.
