Extra Spark storms to victory in close finish

By: Stay Thirsty   January 18 , 2017

M Bobby trained Extra Spark produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to edge past long-time leader Kaguya Himei to win the 1600 metres Dr Ishwari G K Balakrishnan Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. Favourite Michela lost all her chances due to a lethargic beginning from the gates.

Michael Eshwer trained Michela who had made an unsuccessful bid to win the Oaks at Bangalore, was strongly fancied to win as she was back in the familiar environment where she had proved invincible. However, the filly failed to get a good jump and was a beaten cause after she lost more than five lengths at the start. Kaguya Himei had a useful lead going into the final furlong but closer home slackened which allowed Extra Spark to get past her in the final moments of the race. Extra Spark, as is his wont, produced a late rally which produced the desired result. Class Is Class held off late-finishing Momotaro to get the third place. Michela was a tame fourth.

Rakesh trained Star Style who was campaigned with great hope at Hyderabad where she had finished fourth. She then finished second best to one of the good types of youngsters at this centre namely Ascendent. She looked better than the rest in the 1400 metres B Khanna Memorial Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. After Country`s Storm led the field well into the straight, Star Style easily overhauled the front-runner with about 250 metres left in the race and sped clear to record an emphatic win over Nikka who necked out Captain America to claim the runner-up berth.

Feroz Khan`s Country`s Courage towered over the opposition by virtue of his impressive win in his last outing. In what was an open betting affair, Country`s Courage was backed confidently even though raw apprentice Rohit was in the saddle and the draw was also bad. However, Country`s Courage, despite travelling wide into the straight, smoothly cruised ahead and had the race sewn up a long way from home to win by a widening margin of eight lengths over Ephialities. Touch of Romance was third. In the form that he is in, Country`s Courage can complete a hat-trick of wins. The speedy Teri Adah led from the start and managed to thwart the bid of late-charging Ireland by a short neck to win the lower division of the race. Peace Time was third. Interestingly both the divisions were won by apprentices where the jockeys were not allowed to carry their whips.

Michael Eshwer trained Poet looked too good for the opposition in the 1400 metres Bold Majesty Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Jockey K G Steyn had Poet race in a handy position till well into the straight before letting the favourite to stride out. Poet bounced clear to win by a distance over Ascendency, Tremendous and Aliboxer who disputed for the minor positions on the frame.

Protector of Paris from the stables of trainer S M Johnson obliged in the 1400 metres Sankranti Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Protector of Paris shot ahead with a furlong left in the race and the lead built up helped his cause immensely as Zoe came up with a late charge which went in vain as the front-runner held on to win by a fast diminishing margin. Amazing who led from the start stayed on to save place money. Jockey Sai Vamshi who was astride Protector of Paris was also successful in the lower division of the race on Ice Brown. The lesser fancied runner got the better of Sivanta who had attempted runaway tactics in the final furlong to win the race in emphatic fashion. Wolf Rock necked out Alps to get the third position. Ice Weapon, the favourite for the race, lost considerable ground at the start which effectively sealed his fate.

Heidrun made a bold attempt to win the 1200 metres Antequera Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, with aggressive running in front but was found wanting in the final furlong. Robinhood Pandey closed the issue with a decisive charge which saw him establish a good cushion which held him in good stead as Coffee Time and Samay Balwan came home with big efforts. The winner, trained by Sharavanan, had Noorulla in the saddle.

In a three-horse finish, Rakesh trained Infinithoughts charged home with a powerful effort which saw the fancied runner emerge victorious in the 1600 metre Sirsi Plate, a race for horses rated 0 to 25. Sazae Sun had a slender lead going into the final furlong with Safe Bet along the rails and Infinithoughts charging on the wide outside. Infinithoughts managed to clinch the race in a close finish with Sazae San nosing out Safe Bet to get the runner-up berth.
