By: Frankel   January 15 , 2017

Suleiman Attaollahi Serjeant At Arms who is going to be one of the contenders for the prestigious Indian Derby to be held on the first Sunday of February, had a useful lead up race over 2000 metres in the Gr 2 Ramniwas Ramnarain Ruia Gold Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. Serjeant At Arms towered over the rest and the race served only as an exercise to stretch the horse over a trip of 2000 metres.

Serjeant At Arms had tasted one defeat in his illustrious career to Ice Glacier in the Mysore Derby. On that occasion, Ice Glacier had won in record time, in a race which was run at a solid clip. Serjeant At Arms had faltered, losing narrowly. Serjeant At Arms, however, is the winner over 2000 metres in the Kingfisher Ultra Derby. As such, Serjeant At Arms showed no distress over the trip of 2000 metres. What can test Serjeant At Arms over the Indian Derby trip of 2400 metres will be the way it is run. A true run race is bound to test his stamina to the hilt. There are three horses which are likely to be serious contenders for the race namely Ice Glacier, Hall of Famer and Mrs Patmore. The class of Serjeant At Arms is believed to be his biggest asset in the Summit clash.

Highland Breeze set the pace followed by St Andrews and Serjeant At Arms. Sandesh made his move well into the straight and the progeny of Ikhtyar cruised past the front-runners with the jockey barely having to flex his muscles. Serjeant At Arms went away for an effortless win over St Andrews which was only to be expected. The race served the purpose of being a lead up to the Indian Derby without giving any additional data on the star performer in the absence of stiff competition.

Waheed trained Celtic Prince recorded a gutsy win in the 1400 metres Yawar Rashid Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Star Councillor who had gone down narrowly on the last occasion, was expected to make amends but the progeny of Arazan found it hard to bridge the leeway established by the eventual winner and settled for the third slot. Celtic Prince who led aggressively in front, held off a spirited challenge from Artistic to win the race at nourishing odds. Korol showed up inside the final furlong but weakened to go out of contention.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Flashing Honour circled around the field at the final bend and came home with a resolute effort to seal the race in the final furlong of the 1600 metres Lachman K Advani & Maya L Advani Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Jockey Dashrath Singh who replaced P S Chouhan in the saddle, improved places from the rear by bringing him on the wide outside and the lesser fancied runner responded well to get the better of Sumaaq in the final stages of the race. Prince of Heart was third while Othello failed to perform to expectations.

Malesh Narredu trained Frivolous was widely considered by the connections as one of the best horses in their yard. Enjoying a good pull in weights, Frivolous was fancied strongly along with Sherlock to win the 2000 metres Forbes India Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. June led the way with Sherlock in striking distance while Frivolous was eased in the fourth position. Approaching the final bend, Sandesh made his move on Frivolous who swiftly covered the leeway and took control of the proceedings inside the final two furlongs even as Sherlock packed up without a trace. Only Multiglory gave a chase to the favourite but Frivolous proved formidable for his opponent.

Hoshidar Daji trained Critics Choice who has struck great form having notched up four wins out of five efforts, proved her mettle over the extended trip of seven furlongs in the 1400 metres Radheshyam Jhunjhunwala Million, a terms race for four-year-olds and over. Holy Smoke and Congressional were more preferred to land the spoils while Critics Choice who was going over an extended trip for the first time, did not have too many people fancying her chances. Renee led from the start and refused to give up deep into the straight with Holy Smoke putting a desperate effort to overhaul the front-runner. In the meanwhile, Critics Choice who was at the wrong end of the field moved with powerful strides on the wide outside and had the race sewn up well before the winning post was sighted. Renee stayed to take the second position ahead of Holy Smoke. Sandesh rode a fine tactical race with a perfect understanding of the capabilities of the five-year-old mare. Congressional put in a disappointing performance which is in keeping with his inconsistency which has been a feature of his career. Dancing Prances seems to be a pale shadow of his former self which was highlighted by his poor show when he finished fourth which was a dismal performance in a long time in his illustrious career.

The 1200 metres Fight Hunger Foundation Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds saw Altamash Ahmed trained La Magnifique being backed to the exclusion of the rest. However, the got-abroad filly did not perform to expectations and was never in the hunt while finishing a tame third. Windsor Forest shaped to win the race by storming clear in the final furlong but faltered close home as Timeless closed the gap with a big effort and got the nod in the final stride of the race.

Altaf Hussain trained Alishas Pet benefitted by the forward run that she had in her previous essay and the fact that she had a forceful rider in A Imran Khan to guide her fortunes. Alishas Pet got up in time to get the better of the dead-heated duo of Benezeer and Magical Memory to win the 1200 metres Sir H M Mehta Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Maduro had many supporters to put up a good performance but the four-year-old gelding gave a dismal account of himself and finished down the field.

Lesser fancied Alpine Express had a decisive lead going into the final furlong in the 1000 metres Mohammed Rasheed Beg And Rahat Beg Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 and held on to it with a measure of comfort. Grand Paradiso put up a determined effort to catch up with the front-runner who however proved to be unrelenting. Adams Beginning was third.
