Rahul’s Pet too strong in H P Mistry Memorial Cup

By: Tippu Sultan   February 19 , 2017

Donald Netto trained Rahuls Pet who is accumulating bagful of wins during the season, got the fourth win of the season from five outings when the four-year-old filly outclassed the opposition in the 1200 metres H P Mistry Memorial Cup, a terms race four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races. The race ceased to be a contest once Rahuls Pet unleashed her big burst of speed in the final furlong as the rest were stranded.

Rahuls Pet has struck purple patch. Having notched up a win in her only appearance during the monsoon season, the progeny of Green Coast has had a profitable winter winning three of the four starts prior to this run. Her only defeat during the season came in the hands of Exclusive Wind. The speedy Vijays Joy was the runaway leader, setting up a hot pace with King of the Pop, Exclusive Wind and Rahuls Pet not far from the front-runner. Entering the homestretch, jockey Louis Beuzelin brought Rahuls Pet into contention and the filly took the gap between King Of Pop and Exclusive Wind and bounced clear beyond the reach of her pursuers. Rahuls Pet established a big lead and her jockey could take the luxury of easing up the horse long way from home. King of Pop stayed comfortably ahead of Exclusive Wind to take the second spot. Vijay Sakhi ran on well toward the close to finish a suggestive fourth while Vijays Joy weakened to go out of sight.

Trainer Satheesh who had failed to find winners as frequently as he was used to in the previous season, had a successful day, saddling three winners. Limitation bounced back to win the 1600 metres Artillery Cup (Div I), a race for horses rated 46 to 70. Limitation who chased early leader Green Striker till the final bend left his rival stranded by storming clear at the top of the straight and established his superiority with an assertive win. There was a cluster of horses finishing behind for minor berths with Apache Gal heading Grand Canyon for the second position while the third placed horse was an identical distance ahead of Augusta Bombshell. Satheesh also had the winner of the lower division of the race namely Poll Promise who won at fancy odds, barely surviving the onslaught of Kalinda to win by a whisker. Poll Promise shook off pace-setting Penumatcha`s pride with two furlongs left in the race and stormed ahead. Poll Promise had a useful lead going into the final furlong. The final furlong saw last start winner Kalinda put immense pressure on the front-runner. Apprentice jockey Boppanna perhaps was relying more on prayer than his ability to ride out the horse vigorously considering his relative lack of experience. The winning post did come to his rescue as the six-year-old mare just about held on to win from Kalinda in the bobbing of heads. Bharat King necked out Penumatcha`s Pride to save place money. Favourite Dahlois was missing from the line of action.

Earlier in the day, Satheesh had his first winner of the day through Ice Cave in the 1200 metres Oceanic Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Ice Cave led from the start but could not breathe easy as the race progressed towards the finish. Western Expressed came up with a big flourish but found the front-runner escape to the post by a fast diminishing margin and prevail by a whisker. Wonder Star who stayed in touch with the front-runner did not find anything extra when it came to challenging the front-runner and weakened to finish third. Arjun Anne trained Hunter`s Pride proved overwhelmingly superior in the Division III of the race, taking control of the race from the start and skipping away from his opponents in the final furlongs to record a decisive win. Romantic Fire necked out Onk Onk Onk to get the second spot. The Division I of the race saw the ``Doosra`` of Anupam Sharma win the race. While Act In Time was the market fancy, the one to prevail in the end was stablemate Garib Parwar who won the race in emphatic fashion having sewn up the race long way from home. After Bouncer led the field well into the straight expending his energy in the process, Garb Parwar who was in handy position went ahead and then staved off a strong bid by Racing Ikon. Favourite Act In Time was a well beaten third.

Favourite War Cry buckled close home under a powerful surge from Mountain of Light in the 1400 metres Southern Glory Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Jockey Beuzelin Louis had War Cry dictate the pace from the start with Mountain of Light and Symbol of Gold in earnest chase. Down the final furlong, War Cry still enjoyed a healthy leeway but closer home, Mountain of Light managed to overhaul the front-runner. War Cry however kept Symbol of Gold at bay to get the runner-up berth.

Manglipelly Satyanarayana trained Pentagon asserted his supremacy in the 2400 metres Greener Plate, a race for horses rated 26 to 50. Pentagon came in solitary splendour into the homestretch and was not troubled by any of the contestants enroute to a facile win by a widening margin of over two lengths. Bullish Approach was well ahead of Vijay`s Harmony in the second position.

Srinivas Reddy trained Sam The Brave just about managed to win the 1200 metres Wilkinson Plate (Div III), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Sam The Brave led from the start but began to veer out alarmingly in the final furlong. Escobar made good rally on the inside and had a chance to pull it off. But Sam The Brave courageously held on to win by a neck. Sweet Piston was some lengths behind the battling duo in the third position.
